How many? Try 100 -- and there’s room for more.

The Reeses and their two sons, Ian and Sean, will host their fifth annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner Thanksgiving Day in the Epsom Fire Hall. The meal is open to anyone in the Greater Concord area -- or the state -- who can’t afford the meal or doesn’t want to be alone.

It was a chilly November afternoon, and the last of the leaves fell from trees outside her window as Karen Reese relaxed at her dining room table. Laundry tumbled in a dryer, chili simmered on the stove, and the men of her family came in from hunting. It was a comfortable domestic scene -- but in word and deed, Reese made it clear that she knows others aren’t as fortunate.

Reese, a native of Epsom, had had the idea for a free Thanksgiving for years before she started hers in 2004.

“It was embedded in me,” she said, “to reach out to people in need.”

Five years ago, she told George, “It’s time.”

They had 10 helpers and five “guests” that first year, Reese recalled. The Reeses prepared the majority of the food. Though the turnout was small, Reese and her family walked away from that first dinner “knowing it was good.”

Though the dinner is open to anyone, any faith or no faith, the Reeses bring a Christian perspective to their work. They have established Reese Family Ministries, an outreach to couples and families, and they also have their own praise and worship band.

Members of Higher Ground Ministries in Barnstead, they enlist church members to help. Volunteers come from other churches or are family or friends. Last year they had 25 volunteers. She’s organized her regular volunteers into a corps including a kitchen coordinator, food coordinator, and “take-home” coordinator.

Yes, there are leftovers, Reese said with a smile.

The food is all donated now, and Reese doesn’t cut up so much as a carrot stick. She’s too busy greeting people, filling holes in the volunteer corps, and singing onstage with the family band.

They also work. Several volunteers are whole families, and the little ones put on rubber gloves and help out. While she doesn’t let them near any of the hot food or knives, Reese said they can pass out rolls or pie slices -- and are delighted to do it.

Other young people work the dinner to fulfill school community service requirements, she said. And one mom actually called her to ask if her daughter could serve. “She told me, ‘I want my daughter to know what it’s like -- she has everything,” Reese recalled.

The menu hasn’t changed much from 2004. Instead of three turkeys, her volunteer cooks will roast seven this year. There’s stuffing, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, rolls, squash, corn, peas, carrots, and pies. If someone wants to make a “gourmet” item, she lets them, she said, but asks them to go easy on the salt, sugar and fat.

“We try to keep the menu healthy,” she said.

This year she’s expecting the same number of guests, or more, because of the economy. But her volunteers and donors have stepped up their efforts, and she already has seven 20-pound turkeys and most of the trimmings. She’s all stocked for paper goods and supplies, she said. A few more vegetable dishes might be nice, but as of Nov. 24, she’s ready to go.

“It’s not me, it’s God,” she said.

Why do they do it?

“We’ve been there, in need, ourselves,” Reese said. “People need to know hope, that they’re not alone, that other people have gone through it. That’s our message -- you’re not alone.”

She added, “We do a lot of praying before each dinner. We don’t want anyone to stay away because of pride.”

And she’ll continue to take her inspiration from Scripture, especially Matthew 25:35-40. In the waning afternoon light, Reese put on her glasses to read, “Inasmuch as you have done it unto the least of these, you have done it unto me.” The dinner is Thursday, Nov. 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. “or whenever we get done,” Reese said. The dinner is free and the public is welcome. To volunteer or donate, call her at 736-9954.

The world's largest gemstone to debut at Holiday Fair this Sunday, Nov 9th!

Geetings Everyone,

Here is the press release regarding this Sunday's great fund raising event for Lil Iguana Children Safety Organizaton. Please get the word out to all your contacts. This is going to be a great event to be at and the General Admission is FREE with plenty of FREE Parking! See you on November 9th!

Note: The Photo of the Monay-Ki Crystal was taken by MaryAnn McFarland

www.maryannmcfarlandphtography.com

Blessings,

Angie D'Anjou

603 321-4818

The world’s largest double terminated “set” gemstone will make it’s debut appearance on Sunday, November 9, 2008 at the Holiday Inn, Nashua, NH during the Angels, Trinkets and Faeries Holiday Fair produced by Advocates of Holistic Health (www.aohh.org). The crystal – dubbed the Munay-Ki Crystal has been set in a specially designed and craftfully engineered metal mobile sculpture (bringing the total weight to close to 5500 pounds). The Munay-Ki is double terminated and is estimated to be approximately 150,000,000 (150 million) to 200,000,000 (200 million) years old. Ross Ellis who is the steward of the crystal and the artist responsible for the mobile sculpture that is it’s setting will be present at the event to answer questions about the crystal, his artwork and the deeper meaning of the Munay-Ki. Over 7 feet tall when fully erect in it’s setting, the crystal is surrounded by a stage that will allow for safe public access and the ability to have a close encounter with this magnificent natural wonder. Double terminated crystals form in deep pockets in the earth and ones of this size are extremely rare. The mobile sculpture created by Mr. Ellis allows for the crystal to be displayed in all it’s glory. “A lot of folks suggested that I cut one end off in order to have the crystal stand upright” says Mr. Ellis, “but I just couldn’t do that to this crystal – it had to stay completely intact, which is why I chose to create this “setting” for it.” Taking over a year to design, fabricate and finish, the mobile sculpture setting alone is an engineering marvel that allows one person to move an object that weighs more than a car through a 3 foot door opening. “Many people looked at me like I was crazy and said it couldn’t be done, but I was persistent and unwilling to compromise on what I knew could be created” says the artist.

The Holiday Fair where the crystal will debut commences at 9:30 am on Sunday the 9th of November at the Holiday Inn and is open to the general public for a small admission fee. In addition to hosting the debut of the crystal, the event will also feature local crafters, holistic healers and in the Bounty Room there will be a large variety of kid friendly activities hosted by the L’il Iguana Children’s Safety Foundation which is a beneficiary of the event. “I’m very grateful to Angie D’Anjou, the producer of the fair, for her willingness to allow us to debut the Munay-Ki here in the City” says Mr. Ellis. “It’s a pleasure to be able to share the beauty of this gem that is a gift from the Mother Earth”. “Part of my intention in displaying the crystal is to raise awareness of the beauty and power that the Earth has as a creative force and to share in the education of the public about the importance of our natural resources.” “As an unofficial member of Nashua’s Green Team and a consultant working with renewable energy sources it is my intent to use the crystal to help educate about solar power – since quartz (silicon dioxide) is the primary component in solar panels and collectors.”

For more information about the Holiday Fair please contact Angie D’Anjou at 603-321-4818.
For more information about the Munay-Ki Crystal please contact Ross Ellis at 1-228-861-1838

Sen Coburn pointed out in the 08 am track bill the $100+ million subsidy for meals on Amtrack trains WOW BIDEN, TALK ABOUT A FREE RIDE, DEMOCRATS SPREADING THE BURDEN,KEEPING THE WEALTH? our taxmoney not biden's

congress thinks train employees working 100 hours a week are to many,Gee lets not talk about the senates hours,or senate pay? McCain has giving some of his pay back! next 4 months they off cept 2 days in Nov

here is a thought 535 members of congress ,if we cut there pay by $50,000 per year it would come to $26 MILLION a year our grand Children wont have to pay
after 4 years its REAL savings

Senators Barack Obama and Dick Durbin, Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., Gov. Rod Blogojevich, House leader Mike Madigan, Atty. Gen. Lisa Madigan, Mayor Richard Daley.....the leadership in Illinois.....all Democrats. Of course, they're all blaming each other.

They can't blame Republicans, there aren't any!

The state pension fund is $44 Billion in debt, the worst in country. Cook County (Chicago) sales tax of 10.25% is the highest in country.(Look 'em). Chicago school system is one of the worst in country. Briggs, a former Epsom police officer died while working for the Manchester Police Department in 2006. Charron, a young Epsom officer, was killed during a traffic stop in Epsom in 1997.

Unfortunately, the circle hasn’t really been the prettiest thing to look at.

Epsom resident Bob Mc- Kechnie has been working with area businesses, volunteers and landscapers on plans for the circle, and said they’ve come up with a plan that looks nice, will increase visibility through the circle and will be very easily maintained at no cost to the town.

“This is all being done on a volunteer basis,” said McKechnie. “We were kind of in stealth mode until we had all our ducks in a row.”

The Warner-based Pellettieri Associates, Inc., a landscaping, architecture and design company, created the conceptual design for the circle, which includes several different types of greenery and a flag pole.

The plan has been approved by state officials already, who have control of the circle, Mc- Kechnie said. The Board of Selectmen will be updated on the on the design and timeline for the improvements at their next meeting on Monday, Oct. 13.

Between Tuesday, Oct. 14, and Friday, Oct. 17, McKechnie said, the circle will be graded and a silt fence installed. The turf for the circle will also be delivered and laid down.

During the week of Oct. 20 to 24, the loaming and bed preparation will be completed. Planting will start on Monday, Oct. 27, according to McKechnie.

Millican Nurseries of Chichester is contributing the trees and other plantings for the project, and has also stepped up to maintain the circle.

Millican Vice President Ken Michael said the circle will feature the Heritage River birch, a quickly rooting tree with salmon- colored papery bark that can withstand more stress than a typical birch tree and is more resistant to pests.

“We decided to go with that tree because it’s more tolerant of the salt and stress that is going to be in that area,” Michael said. The circle will also contain grow-low sumac, another hardy plant that is pretty resistant to weeds and is fragrant.

The tallest trees in the circle will either be the oak or honey locust trees, but that has not been decided yet, Michael said.

The first step is to get the turf in before winter and set to work on the trees in the spring.

All of the vegetation is low maintenance, and Michael said Millican will be in charge of pruning the trees and bushes every two years or so.

Tips for Seniors to Keep Warm and Save Energy This Winter

· Another Senior ghetto!

Why must we segregate seniors when what they need to keep healthy and active is a neighborhood where they can interact with all ages, walk to the grocery store, post office and find available transportation? And where younger neighbors can be of assistance in an emergency and perhaps offer help such as taking them to the doctor or the store.

In a ghetto such as the one begin proposed where only the elderly reside there will be none of the give and take of a “normal” neighborhood. It is true that affordable housing is needed for seniors, but make it livable and cost effective. We should plan housing where seniors can access as many services as possible on their own, even when they no longer are able to drive.

I once visited an apartment complex in Nashua that was just what I had in mind. It was less than a block from the hospital, two blocks from downtown where bus service is available as well as stores, restaurants, churches with their many social groups and other forms of entertainment. It was easy for a senior in a wheelchair to access an active community. Needless to say, there were no vacancies.

Instead we plan cramped quarters and confine a fast-growing segment of our population to loneliness and take away there independence. Virtual prisons. This is not cost effective. “the longer seniors can function on their own in a friendly environment where they can reach most of the needs of their daily life, the longer they function without expensive paid care, the more money society saves and the better their quality of life.” We seniors are not afraid of dying. We are afraid of living too long. The way we provide for seniors in our community/neighborhoods is how we can insure the “golden” years become a reality.

Let’s stop building prisons for the elderly!

Although nursing homes are bad enough, they are necessary. But, to take away the pleasure of being independent is truly a crime that our society needs to investigate. Yes, there are assisted living facilities that can provide a varied environment, but the cost is prohibitive for those low income seniors being targeted by this project. It is just a matter of where we place our priorities when we choose locations for senior housing. We need to ask: what is essential and how do we obtain it?

A high rise for seniors was built near Catholic Medical Center, a bank, a grocery store and on a bus line. Great! But now the store has left the area and another group of seniors must adapt. Planning boards need to make responsible decisions regarding what is available in neighborhoods. If we need laws, let’s make them!! But do it before we all go broke caring for our fast-growing senior population which you will be joining soon.

Helen Zarnowski, age 86

Seniors Count Coordinating Committee Member

Manchester Regional Area Committee on Aging

New Hampshire Group Urges NH Federal Legislators to Save Their Breath

May 2008 - Breathe New Hampshire joined representatives of the Respiratory Health Association of Metropolitan Chicago, the Alpha-1 Foundation, the American Respiratory Alliance of Western PA, Breathe California, the COPD Foundation, Arkansas Respiratory Health Association, Chicago Thoracic Society and the National Lung Cancer Partnership, and others in calling attention to the challenges those living with lung disease face and to the necessity of preventing lung disease before it starts.

“I was one of six representatives who made the trip from Breathe New Hampshire, including our 2008 Volunteer of the Year, Vincent Kanhai-Singh. Vinnie is actually living with COPD. From May 5-19, the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) is trying to bring 46,000 people to the Registry in an effort called "Thanks Mom." Every day, 6,000 people search the Registry for a life-saving match. Only three in 10 receive the transplant they need, many in part because there is no match for them on the Registry.

Want to help?

Want to volunteer and teach English as a Second Language? I started Classrooms Without Walls
to provide ESL lessons to anyone who wants to learn English free of
charge. It doesn’t matter if they are from Asia, South America, the
United States, etc. In fact, English can be their first language. Maybe
the student just needs some extra practice.

I volunteer and teach some students in China and Colombia. I want to
bring this project to the next level and offer free lessons to more
students. I need your help. I need volunteers to teach. All you need is
a computer and a free Skype account. My lessons are 60 mins., but you and the student(s) determine how long each lesson is.

There are no commitments. Teach 30 mins. a week or longer. Share whatever time you can.

Sincerely,

Alan
