I had been out of town for a minute, so I had evidently missed the news. Another Heartbreak Hotel hobo had met his demise in the Suncook River. I say “another” because this is the second body they’ve found down in the river in the four years that I’ve lived in the ‘bronx. The last dude was running away from Johnny Law after leaving the fine establishment that is the American Legion. Well, he leapt over what he thought was a short fence and took a head-first tumble about thirty feet down into sharp granite ledge. I heard Pembroke shrugged him off as Allenstown’s problem, and subsequently gave-up the chase. I woke up to his crumpled body from the view of my bedroom window.

But on to the recent dead guy! I really don’t know much about it, and neither must the cops because they are asking me. As a matter of fact, I heard it from them. An Allenstown officer was going door-to-door at my building questioning everyone with a river view. He asked my girlfriend if we had heard a disturbance over at the Heartbreak, to which she replied “Which one? You’ll need to be more specific than that.” He wasn’t too amused with her brutal honesty, and indicated that they were investigating a homicide. One male body, waterlogged, downstream toward the Merrimack, came from the Heartbreak, foul play suspected. We’d been gone, so we were of no help – but now we were as curious as cops! Some State Troopers have been around our building a few times since then, so I guess the case been elevated and is still under investigation.

So, here are some other rumors of gossip: One neighbor (I can’t remember who for the life of me) mentioned to me in passing “Hey, did you hear all the commotion over at Heartbreak last night?” I hadn’t been home, and we briefly waxed poetic about what a nuisance that whole Heartbreaker crew is, and how they just walk back-and-forth to Front Street for drugs or to go over to the Legion. This is unfortunately a common topic of conversation and I didn’t think anything of it at the time.

Also, I have heard rumors of some upset fat girls in a black Volkswagen cruising around and asking about their suicidal male friend who they feared was going to jump in the river. This was after it was known that he was dead. I’ve seen them sitting in their parked car over at Mills Falls near the cannon. When we stared at them, they peeled out and sped off like suspects. Sounds to me like somebody returning to the scene of the crime to plant ideas in folks.

Today’s takeaway: Watch out for two killer fat girls in a black Golf.

blue heron

This bird is very timid!! Around 3pm on Friday my girlfriend and I were walking to the store when we witnessed a guy at the intersection of Glass Street and Main Street just fall over on his motorcycle while at the stop sign. Just fell over – completely dumped his bike. It was as if a strong gust of wind or beer had just knocked him over. But luckily he had friends in high places – his pals from the bar ran over and helped to prop him and his bike up. After inspecting the damage on his hog (or hog-wannabe), like a good neighbor his buddies sent him motoring up Main Street toward Route 3.

We sat and watch the police drive back and forth in an effort to contain the pub patrons from doing burnouts on mopeds in the middle of Main or committing other various misdemeanors. I figured that all of this fun would have to be the highlight of the evening – which it was.

I’m not sure that is the best sign for a library benefit community fundraiser. Or a barbeque.

Fantasy Sail - Homeward Bound

I am sailing homeward, climbing the Atlantic -virtually- toward the equator. This year's Virtual Regatta played by hundreds of thousands worldwide sailors is gradually winding to a close. My skiff, christened ‘windfree’, (chuckle) a bit of a paradox, has plied her way through waves, wind, fog, and e-rain. My participation has required my attention for several minutes each day. Virtual incidents involve collisions with icebergs, mammals, seaweed, and even other skiffs while racing 25,000 miles. The three month race is supported by the French website, www.virtualregatta.com. I selected the English version hoping to obtain the 10,000 euro purse. True.

The successes and trials of 320,000 + players can be shared online. With a few clicks of the mouse, I may look in on the progress of my worldwide 'friends' --anywhere from three to fifty in number. Each sailor ‘experiences’ virtual weather and can communicate if they choose. Most don't. One from Brazil is very successful. It is her first time and she is near the head of the pack.We have cheered for each other.

Real time delays are posted with the added or lost points for an unsatisfactory choice of direction, or sail,(skippers may choose one of seven), or an inattention to wind angle. Yep, I ran aground off Chile, South America, Patagonia to be more precise, while negotiating the winds around Cape Horn. My laptop screen revealed my diminished two day lead over family members also connected virtually. It posted the message: "You have lost two thousand nine hundred places."

I correct my error by sailing backwards for several minutes following navigation headquarters advice and realize that I am back in the race. Presently, while I write, I am changing course because I am approaching the doldrums in the southern latitudes. To avoid a “windhole" I must make look at several options. If I am bestilled, my speed could decline from 12.8 knots to 4 or 0 knots. I am in 62,368th place. Headquarters must rely on some powerful, read sophisticated software for displaying multitudes of data.

As my fellow nautical chums climb the western Atlantic, messages fly between ‘skippers.’ We use all device necessary to negotiate the doldrums swiftly, the bane of sailors for centuries. To gain 'purchase' I rotate through a few degrees on a detailed compass to point my bow toward another piece of the horizon Before selecting my positon, I choose my sail with a click on a design, and note the predicted winds twelve or twenty four hours from the present with two other clicks of the mouse.

Anticipating uncertain winds, I am reminded of the poem, “The Rime of the AncientMariner.” (View it on Wikipedia’s encyclopedic site). I am thankful to be sailing aboard my upholstered couch rather than hunkered down in a cramped, tilted, often violently bouncing, cabin, a mast towering sixty feet above my deck or becalmed on a creaking ship.

I invite you to watch the conclusion of the real time Vendee Globe from your armchair. Visit the news magazine, meet the skippers, two are Bristish women, one American, Rich Wilson. Watch the video enhanced website below to learn of the dramas, the fearful incidents that prompted ten proficient sailors to quit this year's race. It will be a four year wait until the next world-traversing solo race begins and ends in France. Maybe I will sail more successfully, virtually.

www.VendeeGlobe.com.

May the wind always be at your back and the spray fly over your head! Cheers, the skipper of windfree.

Cruise With 2008 Miss NH Natalie Shaw

Weirs Beach, NH –Cruise and mingle with Miss NH 2008 Natalie Shaw and the 2009 Miss NH contestants on a brunch cruise on Sunday, August 24 around beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee.
