Two young women are this year’s winners of the Windham Garden Club’s Nancy Surette Memorial Scholarship.
Mary Kathleen Conboy and Natalie Delfosse, both of Windham, each received the $2,000 prizes at the club’s recent season-ending Summer Solstice awards dinner.
Conboy, 2007 valedictorian of Central Catholic High School in Lawrence, Mass., maintained a perfect 4.5 grade-point average, took advanced placement courses and was a National Merit Scholarship finalist.
She served as president of the National Honor Society and editor of the school newspaper, while finding time to volunteer for the Red Cross and at Lawrence General Hospital and tutor Windham Middle School students in math.
The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Conboy, she will soon be off to the University of Notre Dame as a biology major.
A graduate of Salem High School, Delfosse has completed her freshman year at the University of New Hampshire as a biology major in a premedical curriculum.
While maintaining a 4.0 grade-point average at UNH, she also co-captained a team for a successful Relay for Life walk on campus and will continue volunteering in medically oriented activities.
Her high school activities included membership in the National Honor Society and active work in that group’s community service projects, such as the Dollars for Scholars phone-a-thon and chairmanship of a cancer walk that raised $20,000 to benefit a family friend.
She is the daughter of Betsy and Duane Delfosse.
The scholarship honors the memory of Nancy Surette, a past president of the club. After a successful 25-year management career at Digital, she left for UNH, from which she graduated with an honors degree in horticultural technology.
She established her own landscape design company and served as chairman of the Windham Conservation Commission. She succumbed to cancer in January 2000.
