Skateboard park could be permanently closed

Residents attending a public meeting will have the opportunity to weigh in on the idea of banning dogs from Griffin Park.
Selectmen will meet at Golden Brook School on Monday, Nov. 20. The meeting begins at 7 p.m.
The public can voice their opinions on the idea recently floated by at least one selectman: to ban dogs from the park.
Town Administrator David Sullivan said the idea is being considered because some dog owners are not following park rules: that dogs must be kept off sports fields, they must be kept on a leash no longer than eight feet, and they must be cleaned up after.
Dispensers at the park provide plastic bags for doing that.
“A lot of people do (follow the rules), but unfortunately, a lot of people don’t,” Sullivan said.
Selectmen want input from residents before making any decisions, he said.
Another subject for public discussion at the meeting is whether the town’s skateboard park should be permanently closed. Sullivan said that rules have been broken by some of its users, including not wearing helmets.
There have been other problems, including littering and vandalism, and some skatepark users have been disrespectful to the police, Sullivan said.
The skatepark closed for the season on Nov. 1.
