The Weare Winter Wanderers,
a snowmobile club
formed in 1970, seeks help
constructing a new 4-mile
trail.
According to trail master
Mike Duhaime of Weare, a
large land closure forced the
club to reroute the current
trail and create a new one.
The current trail runs from
Clough State Park, over Drew
Lake Reservoir and across
Route 202/9 in Hopkinton, but
the law states snowmobilers
cannot legally cross a large
body of water controlled by
a dam. Duhaime said for the
past 20 or so years, the government
has looked the other
way, but in December 2009,
decided it was time to speak
up.
“It finally became an issue
that needed to be enforced,”
said Duhaime.
Duhaime said the start
and end points for the new
trail will remain the same, but
the new trail will instead go
around the reservoir.
Weare has 40 miles of trails
the Winter Wanderers maintain
during the winter, which
connect to trails in Henniker,
Bow, Goffstown, Hopkinton
and Dunbarton.
“If you were to look at the
state of New Hampshire trail
map for the whole state, you
would see we are the gateway
to the north and used by
locals and tourists alike,” said
Duhaime.
With 4 miles of trail to create,
the club has had to solicit
various local businesses for
donations for trail construction.
“Many of these guys
are snowmobile guys, so it
hasn’t been a huge deal,” said
Duhaime.
Trail construction began
Saturday, July 24, and will continue
on Saturday mornings
through the summer. General
labor is needed for tree trimming
and brush cutting, carpentry
skills are needed to construct
two bridges and heavy
equipment users are needed.
Duhaime said this would also
be a great opportunity for high
school students needing community
service hours to step up.
