Arthur Aaronson will retire as principal of John Stark Regional High School in Weare on June 22, but not from the world of education.
Aaronson has signed a one-year contract to be an educational consultant to mentor principals in the public school system in Dubai, part of the United Arab Emirates.
“They’re reforming their very traditional education system so it’s more student centered than textbook driven,” said Aaronson. “That’s much of what I’ve done at John Stark. So it seemed a natural fit for me.
“I worry about John Stark students serving in the Middle East,” Aaronson continued. “I feel I need to do something about (the situation), and education is ultimately the answer to peace in this world.”
Aaronson said the United Arab Emirates has brought in many foreigners for this task.
“They’re talking about bringing in 50 educational consultants from England, Australia, the United States and Canada,” he said.
Aaronson has been the principal of John Stark for eight years, and an educator for 40.
He began his career in education with the Peace Corps in 1967, when he taught middle school students in Western Samoa.
Before going to John Stark, Aaronson was the principal at Black River High School in Ludlow, Vt. He said his wife currently lives in Vermont and he commutes there on the weekends.
“We’re sad to see him go,” said SAU 24 Superintendent of Schools Christine Tyrie. “He’s been here for eight years, and he’s done a lot of positive things for the school.”
As of July 1, current Assistant Principal Michael Turmelle will take over as principal.
“The reason the School Board promoted me to principal was because they wanted a smooth transition and continuation of the things we have started,” said Turmelle. “There’s going to be big shoes to fill.”
“(Turmelle) brings a commitment to John Stark. He has the history,” said Tyrie.
Current social studies teacher Michael Smith will fill Turmelle’s position as an interim assistant principal.
Aaronson said he feels very good about what’s been accomplished in the last eight years, but he’s ready to do something different.
“This job in Dubai will probably be the toughest job I’ve ever had because I’ll be dealing with another culture and trying to implement change.”
“We’re all excited for him,” said Tyrie. “It’ll be a challenge for him.”
