Stark off to strong start this winter season

Hanover hosted the first Alpine competition of the season Friday, Jan. 5, at Ragged Mountain in Danbury. The John Stark Alpine skiing team won both of the two giant slalom races, beating division rivals Hanover, Lebanon, Plymouth, Laconia and Hollis-Brookline, as well as newcomer St. Thomas Aquinas.

Seniors Travis Nevins and Austin Nevins led the Generals in the morning, finishing first and second with combined times of 44.13 seconds and 44.49 seconds, respectively.

Sophomore Nathan Goldsberry finished 10th in 47.80 seconds, and junior Ross Macklin finished 11th in 47.82.

Seniors Alex Shreenan and Robert Stone placed 27th and 37th, while freshman Jack Brown placed 48th.

Alastair Dowst, also a freshman, crashed in his first run, but turned in a solid time of 24.36 in his second run.

John Stark finished with 380 points in the morning race. St. Thomas was second with 364 points.

In the afternoon, Travis Nevins won again, Austin Nevins took fifth place, Goldsberry was ninth, and Ross Macklin finished 12th.

Dowst finished 18th, Shreenan was 21st, Stone took 29th, and Jack Brown was 46th.

Stark finished the afternoon competition with 377 points, 19 ahead of second-place Hanover.

The Generals’ lone female skier, freshman Catie Stone, finished 37th and 40th in her firstever Alpine competition.

John Stark is scheduled to face defending Division-II champion Kennett at Cranmore Mountain in North Conway on Friday, Jan. 19.
