JAFFREY – Four hikers had
to be rescued from two mountains
in two separate incidents
Monday, July 26, according
to New Hampshire Fish and
Game officials.
At about 4:30 p.m. officials
from Mount Monadnock State
Park in Jaffrey called Fish and
Game to report two lost teenagers
on the mountain.
Cassandra Hailson, 15, and
Mathew Correia, 18, both of
Salem, were able to get a cell
signal and called one of their
parents. They said they’d lost
the trail shortly after starting
their decent from the summit
at about 2:30 p.m.
The parent called park
personnel for help. Fish and
Game officers told the teens
to call the 911 operator. From
that call, rescuers were able to
get the teens’ GPS coordinates
from their phones to give rescuers
their approximate location.
Fish and Game officers
found the hikers at about 9
p.m. several hundred yards
west of the Pumpbelly Trail.
“The hikers were in good
spirits, but did not have food,
water or flashlights with them,”
officials said in a press release.
Earlier in the day, Fish and
Game officers were called to
assist an 81-year-old man down
a trail on Mt. Chocorua in the
White Mountains.
Richard Weeks, of Lynnfield,
Mass., was hiking the
mountain with his family.
They started out at about 11
a.m. but after they reached the
top, Weeks became fatigued.
His son, Richard Weeks
Jr. of Portsmouth, stayed with
him, while the rest of the family
hiked out.
“When it became clear
that father and son would not
be able to reach the trailhead
before dark, Weeks’s wife
called for help.” said Fish and
Game officials.
Officers hiked up the trail
to assist the two men. They
reached the trailhead at about
12:30 a.m. on July 27.
