Former Salem man finds fame on MTV's "Real World"

BY DERRICK PERKINS

You can find him adorning the pages of Cosmopolitan magazine and in every episode of MTV’s “Real World: Brooklyn,” but Scott Herman still calls the Gateway to the White Mountains his home.

The personal trainer turned model and aspiring actor, now 24 and still living in Brooklyn, grew up on both sides of the New Hampshire border, splitting his time between his father in Lawrence, Mass., and his mother and stepfather in Salem. The contrast between the grittier streets of Lawrence and the small-town feel he got in Salem helped round him out as a person, he said.

“I liked the fact that I got to grow up in two different places,” Herman said. “When you’re walking around Lawrence you learn how to carry yourself and have street smarts. Living in Salem, I had to learn to get along with a preppier crowd.”

By the age of 14, Herman had begun working at an area Gold’s Gym. A few years later, he had started a DJ business with a friend, both of them sophomores in high school at the time. Since then, Herman has worked as a personal trainer, earned his real estate license, broken into the modeling business and launched a fitness Web site, www.scott hermanfitness.com.

Getting a spot on MTV’s “Real World” has given him a chance to let his personality shine and given his career a boost, he said. Surrounded by roommates less focused on the city’s nightlife and more about what they wanted to get out of their time on the show made it an unforgettable experience for Herman.

“Our cast was full of very creative independent people, people who didn’t worry about just where the next bar we were going to go was. For us it was about being there and pursuing our dreams,” He said. “I’d definitely do it all over again ... I’ve talked to all my roommates and we all agree that as much work as it was, it was a lot of fun.”

Of the four-month span of filming, Herman said the hardest part was getting used to having a microphone strapped to him. Adjusting to life in Brooklyn was less of a challenge, he said, describing himself as having always felt at heart like a “city kid growing up in a small town.”

Though planning to stay in Brooklyn to pursue his acting and modeling careers – he hopes to be the next face of Calvin Klein and land a role as the star of the upcoming Captain America movie – Herman hasn’t forgotten his roots in Southern New Hampshire.

In fact, he is hoping to buy a house in the Granite State sometime in the future.

“Sometimes you want to just get away from (Brooklyn) and actually drive a car and go more than 30 miles an hour. I live in the city now and I love it, but it’s great to go back home,” Herman said.

I lived in Haverhill Mass for several years as I would often go across the border to Salem to avoid sales tax. I am glad another person from the area made it on The Real World after Methuen's CT was on the Paris season. Scott looks to have a lot ahead of him - http://www.mm-agency.com/scott-herman/ ,Michael Martin
