Police stepped up their security
presence at the Mall at
Rockingham Park after officials
discovered a note in a changing
room threatening to bomb the
facility on Wednesday, Aug. 20.
The note, which was found in a
public changing facility on Friday,
Aug. 14, did not specify a time and
listed no demands, according to
Salem police Capt. Shawn Patten.
The exact message in the note
was not released by police.
The authorities had worked
closely with mall officials to develop
a plan to address the situation
and ensure public safety,
Patten said, though, owing to the
nature of the threat, the specifics
could not be made public.
The police department has
also made whatever resources it
has to handle the situation available
to mall officials, according
to Patten.
“We obviously have a lot of resources
that we can tap into, not
just in Salem, but statewide. We
will do whatever is necessary to
ensure safety,” Patten said. “Obviously,
we’ve made calls in order
to get as much resources we need
to handle it. Really what it boils
down to working with the mall to
see what they want to do.”
Spokesman Kevin Flynn said
the mall was cooperating with
the Police Department in every
way possible.
“It goes without saying that
safety and the well-being of our
customers and employees is our
first priority,” Flynn said. “We
have a proactive and vigilant
security team together with the
Salem Police Department.”
While police don’t have
any information that the bomb
threat is serious, Patten said the
department takes all threats extremely
seriously.
“We’ve had other bomb
threats of this nature. A lot of
time they happen at the schools,
or there are some suspicious
packages left in areas,” he said.
“Once 2001 hit, the way we handled
these things changed.”
The investigation into the
note is ongoing, though police
have not yet found a suspect behind
the bomb threat.
