Salem man charged with child rape

BY JENN McDOWELL

A Salem man who served time for rape and murder has been arrested on warrants for felonious sexual assault and aggravated felonious sexual assault, Salem police said.

George Quintero, 43, of 75 Wheeler Ave., allegedly kissed and inappropriately touched a young girl on at least two separate occasions, the first crime taking place at his home and the second allegedly occurring at the home of the girl’s mother in Medford, Mass.

“The Medford Police Department is investigating incidents in their jurisdiction, and this information came out,” said Salem police Capt. Shawn Patten.

The arrest was made after Medford police took a report from the 9-year-old victim’s mother that Quintero had molested the girl on March 23, Easter Sunday, in Medford.

The girl’s mother further reported to Medford police that Quintero had molested the girl previously in the basement of his home in Salem sometime in February 2007, when the girl was 7.

The Middlesex County district attorney, covering Medford, called the Rockingham County attorney’s office in New Hampshire and reported that one of the sexual assaults had taken place in Salem, Patten said.

At Quintero’s arraignment on Thursday, June 12, prosecutors asked Salem District Court Judge John Korbey to set bail at $100,000. Korbey went above that request, setting bail at $250,000 cash.

According to court records, Quintero is a sex offender currently registered with the Salem Police Department.

His status as a sex offender stems from the rape, burglary and murder of a woman in Neu Ulm, Germany, in 1984.

The United States military convicted Quintero on those charges, and Quintero served 17 years of a 27-year sentence.

If Quintero is able to come up with the $250,000 to post bail, he can have no contact with anyone under the age of 18, has to stay at least 100 yards away from schools and day-care centers, and has to be in his home after 6 p.m.

A probable cause hearing was scheduled for Wednesday, June 18, at 10 a.m.
