Salem High School student designs her own flip-flop line

Salem High School sophomore Jamie Klufts, 16, began her career as a fashion designer when she was in fourth grade. Her flip-flop company, Divalicious, is the name her friend’s mother helped the girls come up years ago while they were playing pretend.

“Later on, when I went on to start to make my business, I took the name from there,” said Klufts.

Her handmade flip-flops have gained popularity over the years in the halls of Salem High School, and now they’re for sale at FabnFaux, a jewelry and accessory store located at 254 N. Broadway.

Ann Ming Kalutkiewicz, owner of FabnFaux, asked Klufts to make animal print flip-flops specially for the store after she heard about them from her daughter, Krysten, her business partner and one of Jamie’s classmates.

“One of the things I had decided to do when I opened my shop was feature local designers,” said Kalutkiewicz.

Klufts’ flip-flops are being featured at FabnFaux this month in the animal print section and they can be purchased there for $8 a pair.

The buzz about Kluft’s flipflops started three years when she began to wear them to school and she got bombarded with questions and requests for orders. Initially she only sold them to her close friends and family.

Now, one of the most surprising things for Klufts is seeing fellow students she doesn’t know in the hallway sporting her flipflops.

“I went to an outdoor fair thing with my aunt awhile ago and I saw someone with something similar, not quite what I do, but I got inspired by that.” Said Klufts.

After that craft fair, she began to construct her own flip-flops out of various materials such as fleece, fun fur, and buttons. Klufts finds flip-flops both in stores and online, and tries to match the color of the flip-flops with the appropriate decorating material.

“The ones that I wear most often are black with blue fleece and they have little spots of color in them,” said Klufts. “Those are my go-to pair of shoes.”

Singing in a choir in Derry, working at Market Basket, and the National Honor Society are a few of the other activities that Klufts participates in aside from shoe design.

Klufts considers her business to be a hobby of and is unsure of what the future has in store. For now, she is taking media, visual arts and applied art classes at school.

I bought a pair today and my daughter is so proud to wear these in school. I think you should have a class for kids who can come in and learn. My daughter actually went and got the fabric and I'm teaching her how to make these. Also It's nice to hear that this young girl is thriving. She is headed in the right direction, Never know what you can do until you try. You go girl!
