Last year’s 10-10 record and first-round playoff loss, said Briggs, was a reflection of a talented yet inconsistent team going through growing pains.
And while hesitant to offer a 2007-’08 prediction, Briggs conceded progress is expected.
“I would be disappointed if we don’t finish in the top eight this year, which would give us a first-round home playoff spot,” said the mentor. “Would I like to exceed that? Absolutely. But right now, we’re just looking to get that first-round playoff game and see what we’re made of.”
A solid senior class and an exceptional group of juniors keys this year’s postseason hopes.
In total, the Lady Blue Devils return eight varsity players, including four starters, and welcome seven newcomers.
Amanda Saab, an all-state honorable mention last season as a sophomore, takes the post as an undersized center.
“At the next level she’s going to be a guard,” said Briggs of her sub-6-foot standout. “But she’s such an athletic, high-quality player on both ends of the floor, she’ll be out there quite a bit no matter who else we have out there because she can play anywhere on the court so well.”
Senior Michaela Galvin, a strong contributor on the state champion field hockey team, starts at point guard this season and shares the backcourt with junior Caitlyn Peters.
Senior Danielle Stoodley, who led the Lady Blue Devils’ volleyball squad to back-to-back championships, plays the three guard/small forward spot.
Jessica Sexton, another senior, starts at power forward, though her coach said her versatile play and speed make her more of a swing-player.
Also returning this season are senior Courtney Record and juniors Sarah McCook, Katherine Beaulieu, Melanie Sachs, and Kelsi Record.
Of the newcomers, Briggs said sophomores Sarah Raye, Olivia Connors and Erica Begin have stood out.
“Olivia and Erica are athletic forwards who will be able to contribute in a very solid way early, especially with their rebounding,” she said. “Sarah Raye can really play (on the perimeter) and has just a beautiful outside jumper.”
Nora Galvin also joins the Lady Blue Devils.
While the combination of experienced veterans and flashy newcomers should make the season interesting no matter what, Briggs said her players are already commenting on the rapid chemistry being established on the court.
“I think it bodes well for what we’re about to do.”
