Police seek man who tried to handcuff woman

BY MATT HERSH

Police are looking for a man who reportedly tried to impersonate being an officer and attempted to handcuff a woman as she was walking on Tuesday, Nov. 7.

Deputy Police Chief Robert Larsen said the woman told investigators that a man looking to be in his 30s approached her as she was walking on Play Camp Road at approximately 10 p.m., flashed a badge and tried to handcuff her.

The woman, in her 20s, was able to run away, and the suspect quickly fled the scene, Larsen said.

Play Camp Road is off South Policy Street near the Soule Elementary School.

The suspect was described as a white male wearing all black clothing and having a goatee. Police were notified of the incident by a caller who came across the woman around 10 p.m.

When police interviewed the woman, she told them she ran as soon as he tried to handcuff her. Larsen said he does not believe the suspect was an officer.

It is not known whether the badge the suspect flashed was real or fake, Larsen said.

“Unfortunately, you can pick that kind of stuff up in stores,” he said. Initial reports suggested the suspect was driving an Eagle Talon or Mitsubishi Eclipse but have been found to be inaccurate, Larsen said.

“At this point we don’t know if there was a car involved or if he was just on foot,” he said. Larsen said similar incidents have occurred in the past and the suspect often attacks multiple people.

That’s why police will be contacting other local communities to see if they have experienced similar incidents, Larsen said. Police have few clues, and Larsen said anyone with information about the incident should contact Detective Richard Oliveri at 603-893-1911.
