Pembroke sophomore shines

BY MATT STOUT

When her high school career concludes, Allison Brehm may just have a record to herself.

Brehm, a sophomore on the Pembroke Academy track and field team, completed one of the most impressive individual performances of the day on Saturday, May 26, at the Class I championships at Merrimack Valley High School in Penacook.

The second-year star tied a 45-year-old Class I record in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line in 25.84 seconds, and finished second in the 100-meter dash and third in the long jump, but lost out on two individual titles and the record in the 200 to another speedster.

Lebanon’s Anna Cioffredi edged Brehm in the 100, 12.31 seconds to 12.55, and again in the 200 with a new mark of 25.06 to defend her titles in both events. The junior, also the defending Class I champ in the 400, retained that title as well.

But Brehm carried her success over to the field, where she leapt 16 feet to place third in the long jump. Brehm, who set the school record in the event on her first attempt as a freshman, qualified to compete in all three events at the Meet of Champions on Saturday, June 2, at the University of New Hampshire.

As a rookie last season, she placed second in the 100 at the M of C, .29 seconds behind Cioffredi.

Thanks to Brehm, who compiled 22 of the Spartans’ 23 points, Pembroke placed 10th as a team. Senior Carlotta Civera earned the team’s other point with a sixth-place throw of 31-feet, 1.5 inches in the shot put.

Civera also placed 10th in the 100-meter hurdles and 11th in long jump. Freshman Kacie Paradie took 10th in the high jump when she cleared 4-8.

For the boys, the Spartans received strong performances from Brian Juranty, who placed seventh in the discus throw with a toss of 117-04, and Ben Gibbs, who placed ninth in the javelin with a heave of 135-9.

Josh Fallon placed 12th in the 400 with a time of 55.24 seconds, and Kris Reynolds finished in 13th in the 200 at 24.22.
