Comebacks – PA girls return longtime coach in renewed search for playoff success

BY SAPNA PATHAK

Deb Smith had a hard time leaving her post as head coach of Pembroke Academy’s softball team. One year later, fate helped bring her back to the place she’s long called home.

Taking a year’s hiatus to focus on life away from the diamond, Smith returns again to the same field where she learned to play the sport.

“I had to step down before last season, and it was very difficult to leave,” said Smith, who co-coaches this year with Beth Hamilton. “Coming back is a blessing I never expected. I had to do what I had to do, and I assumed PA would do the same. But I’m thankful and excited it worked out this way.”

Smith welcomes a group of returners who were on the squad when it was a Class L club. In 2005, Smith’s last year with the team, the Spartans moved to Class L and reached the postseason tournament. Last season, they returned to Class I action, making a semifinal appearance.

Senior pitcher Heather Farley, Emily Parker, Katie Scofield, Devin Cleary and Ang Noto each bring multiple years of experience to the team. Catcher Sam Boisvert, a force on offense, returns to her role and should see time in the outfield.

Noto and sophomore Molly Griggs share chores at first base, while sophomore Jenni Poulin plays across the diamond at third. Poulin, also an ice hockey player, brings a strong arm and quick speed on the basepaths. Junior Sam Beauchesne anchors the infield at shortstop. Senior Kaitlyn Martinelli also plays infield.

“Some of them were in Class L as young players, and they did tremendously well,” said Smith. “When you think of the Salems and Pinkertons in Class L, it was great to say we made the tournament then. This year we’ve got some people set in their starting roles, but we’re working on building depth to plan for girls leaving someday.”

First-time varsity player Shannon Keeler will see time in the outfield, Brittany Welcome patrols second base and senior Kristy Chaput gives the lineup a strong bat. Team manager Kaitlin Moulin, recovering from a preseason knee injury, will use the time to develop her catching skills.

“The program’s been a big part of my life,” said Smith. “I played here more than 25 years ago and now to come back … I never thought I’d be back here. We’ve got a lot of players who’ll play significant roles this year. I’m ready to start the season.”
