Man arrested after crashing four-wheeler

A Massachusetts man was arrested on several drug and motor vehicle charges after crashing on a four-wheeler while fleeing police.

John T. Barry, 24, of Dracut, Mass., was taken into custody on Jan. 27 when Pelham police officer Matthew Kulesz saw Barry’s vehicle coming down Bridge Street at Jericho Road with one headlight and traveling at what looked like a rate of high speed at 10:35 p.m. Radar showed the vehicle was doing 56 mph in a 35 mph zone. As the vehicle got closer, the officer realized that the vehicle was a four-wheeled off highway recreational vehicle.

As police gave chase, Barry turned onto Jericho Road and accelerated in an attempt to get away, police said.

A half-mile down Jericho Road, Barry attempted to negotiate a corner and struck a small snow bank on the opposite side of the road, causing him to be thrown from the four-wheeler, which flipped and landed on top of him.

He was arrested after her was found to be uninjured. He was transported to the police station where he refused medical treatment, police said During the arrest, Barry was allegedly found to be in possession of marijuana and a glass smoking pipe.

Barry has been charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated driving while intoxicated, disobeying an officer, possession of marijuana, possession of drugs in a motor vehicle, speed and operating an unregistered OHRV on the roadway.

Barry was held at the police station overnight and was released in the morning on $5,000 personal recognizance bail. He is scheduled to appear before Salem, District Court on Feb. 8.
