Pelham boys win, girls fall in tennis opener with Monadnock

BY JERRY LIPTAK

The Pelham boys tennis team shut out Monadnock in its season opener, 9-0.

Top-seeded Scott Connatser defeated Alex Ball, 8-2, while Pelham’s No. 2 player, Brad Shapiro, bested Evan Barlow, 8-5. The Connatser- Shapiro doubles team beat the Ball-Barlow duo as well, 8-2.

Ryan Fyfe won the No. 3 singles match, edging Andrew Becklo, 8-6.

David Pereira handled James Brady at No. 4, 8-3. It was more of the same in doubles, as Pelham’s Fyfe-Pereira team won, 8-5, over Becklo-Brady.

Jon Wallace defeated Josh Rudolph in the No. 5 match, 8-6, and Brady Tryon had no trouble with Harry Durfee at No. 6, 8-1.

Wallace-Tryon handled Rudolph and his doubles partner, Peter Nikiforakis.

Though the girls lost to Monadnock, 7-2, there were two bright spots for the Lady Pythons – Taylor LaPointe beat Monique Giroux in the No. 3 battle, 8-6, and No. 6 seed Nicole Mastacouris edged Allison Dreyfuss by the same score.

LaPointe and Erika Mogauro, Pelham’s No. 3 doubles team, dropped a 9- 7 decision to Monadnock’s Emma Strandfeldt and Catherine Seltzer. Jacky Ta lost a heartbreaker at No. 5 to Strandfeldt, 9-7.

Meghan Szmyt, Shannon Krauss and Dawn Ely also competed for Pelham.

I would just like to congradulate Sophomore Peter Nikiforakis on his amazing job during this match.Though they lost, he presense was felt on the tennis court and the hearts of millions. Tennis is a sport that not many people think of. But little do these people realize the hard work and many hours of painful toil these dedicated players such as nikiforakis has throughout his years. Some say that this young lad will be publishing his life memoirs in a short brief autobiography coming out at an unprecedented day to be specified at a later time. I, look forward to reading about this young man's struggles through the early life and promising career through the tennis world. Perhaps we will get a behind the scenes look at other "activities" Nikiforakis enjoys ( among his amazing golfing career and good times with friends on the golf course during the year) I look forward to watching this amazing athlete continue to play on and bless the sport.

you think just his presence was left on the tennis court...what about the other people who played good matches?  what about the rest of the kids out there, do you not think they put as much effort and "hours of painful toil"
