After a Pelham woman reported that a man broke into her home and tried to sexually assault her, police from Pelham and other towns searched for him in her neighborhood and other streets.
But the attacker – who was described to Pelham police by the woman – apparently never existed.
Police said she made up the story and may face charges for filing a false report.
Police went to the woman’s Misty Lane home on July 29, following a 911 call reporting a home invasion. She was taken to Southern New Hampshire Medical Center in Nashua for minor injuries.
During their investigation, however, officers found inconsistencies in the evidence and information provided by the woman, and when they spoke to her about it, she confessed that no one broke into her home or attempted to assault her, according to police.
Lt. Gary Fisher wouldn’t provide much comment on the inconsistencies but said that when the woman reported the attack, she said part of the man’s face was covered.
When she described him for a police composite, however, she described that part of his face, according to Fisher.
Police are not releasing the woman’s name or age. A laceration on the woman’s leg that was treated at the hospital was actually self-inflicted, Fisher said.
The woman had told police she didn’t know the man and described him as a white middle-aged man, approximately 5 feet 7 inches with a thin build who was wearing a white tank top, blue jeans and black boots.
