A girl who attends Pelham High School has confessed to writing several anti-gay notes, according to Superintendent Elaine Cutler.
There were approximately five handwritten notes that were posted on lockers and in the girls bathroom at the school, Cutler said.
They were discovered by students last week and early this week, she said.
One note listed five students as “homomaniacs” and identified them as gay or ***, according to Cutler.
The note said they should not be respected and cautioned students to stay away from them and to watch out “for they may try to get you to join them when you’re weak.”
The incidents caused emotional harm to students and prompted false rumors of a bomb scare, hit list and an armed shooter, Cutler said.
The school notified police and officers investigated and patrolled the school.
School officials said they are committed to providing a safe environment at the school for students.
“They’re (the notes) a bit vague but they can be construed as threatening in some respects,” said Police Chief Joseph Roark.
“We always take these types of incidents seriously,” he added.
Two messages were posted to parents of PHS students through the parent portals of the school district’s PowerSchool computer system.
The first message informed parents the notes had been discovered and encouraged students with information to contact school officials. The second message, posted later, said the student responsible for writing the notes had been identified.
Cutler said the girl, who is a minor, confessed to writing the notes on Tuesday, May 15.
“We’ll work with the Police Department as well as the administration for appropriate consequences, as well as to provide assistance to her and her family,” she said. “I think this is a student with some issues.”
