Grammy Awards - like a circus?

I completely missed the Grammy Awards this year.

I didn't even realize it was on, actually.

I'm a big music fan, too.  I guess British rocker Amy Winehouse picked up five awards at the show.  Not that she was present to receive the awards, but they did show her accepting them via satellite from London.  Am I the only one on earth that doesn't recognize her talent?  Her famous song, "Rehab" might repeat over and over in my head like a bad commercial, and her behavior away from the stage might be fodder for TMZ, but I don’t understand her musical appeal.  And what’s with her hair?

So, I guess I didn’t miss anything?

That’s not entirely true.  I missed Kanye West’s emotional a capella performance of “Hey Mama” which he sang in honor of his mother who died a few months ago due to complications of plastic surgery.

I was rather disappointed to learn that I missed a Tina Turner/Beyonce duet of “Proud Mary”, my very favorite Tina Turner tune of all-time.  I want to follow that up with the word ruined.  But I heard it wasn’t half bad.

And I missed a virtual appearance by none other than Frank Sinatra.  Insert sarcastic remark here.  What?  Now I understand that the Grammies are known for pairing up unlikely stars but this is too much.  Ol’ Blue Eyes sang with – you guessed it – Alicia Keys.  That must have been something.  Not that I don’t love Alicia Keys.  Her voice is sultry and smooth and the girl’s got skills.  But, the tacky virtual duet thing just doesn’t do it for me.

It was the 50th Anniversary of the Grammy Awards.  I know what you’re thinking.  How could I have missed that?  I have no excuses, but I do know someone who has Tivo.  That doesn’t mean I’ve watched it yet.  But, in honor of their 50th Anniversary, they served up an elaborate tribute to the Beatles, complete with a Cirque du Soleil interpretation of their music.

Perhaps I should belatedly tune in, just for that.
