A new road-virgin territory and a clueless GPS

New roadThis morning as I drove to Windham to teach the new member ethics orientation class for the board of REALTORS, I was pretty excited. Was it open? I kept wondering about the new 111 bypass.

It has been a project in the works for a few years and planned for many more.

Would it finally be open?

It was supposed to open on Monday but it wasn't.

When I left on Monday to go to Vermont I purposely drove that way so I could experience the new road...it wasn't open even though the newspaper said it would be. I was bummed!

I've traveled this stretch of route 111 for years and getting from my house to the board office or route 93 should only take 15 minutes tops.

Due to traffic congestion however that ride could be as long as 30 minutes plus!  Never and easy ride!

I've always felt bad for the folks that live along a very busy stretch of 111 by Shadow Lake. The literately would take their life in their hands just crossing the street to get to the beach! I can only imagine how they they must have felt when over night their busy highway turned into a back country road.

Years ago I sold a little waterfront camp on that road...it was a dangerous spot but the price was reasonable (cheap) and I remember talking with the buyers about how nice it would when and if the bypass actually got built.

I'm so happy  especially for them that it finally became a reality.

It was surreal driving on the new road today...virgin territory and I felt confused, even the GPS was clueless.

I'm happy to report that it took me all of 15 minutes to get to Windham today.

How sweet it is... A new road-virgin territory and a clueless GPS!

In this case I was smarter than my GPS.

I wonder how long it will take for the GPS to figure out that road exists.

We've had an opportunity to drive the new road too. We love it. It used to take forever to get to Sam's scout meeting in Salem and I bet now we save a good 10 minutes. And we too have thought about those who have to take their lives in their hands when crossing to Shadow Lake.
