Rotary to host speech contest April 5

The Hopkinton Rotary’s annual High School Student Four-Way Test Speech Contest will take place Thursday, April 5, at 7 p.m., in the Community Room at the Hopkinton library.

The contest is open to students grades 9 to 12 who prepare and present a five-minute speech.

This year’s topic is “Applying the Rotary Four-Way Test in our everyday relationships with other people.”

Alicia Cross, Bruce Salsbury and David Feller will serve as judges.

The goal of the speech contest is to help students develop public speaking skills and to address issues of ethics as they apply to everyday situations.

The winner advances to a semi-final competition, competing with students from across Southern New Hampshire and Southern Vermont, and then in a final competition at the Rotary District 7870 Annual Conference in Rockport, Maine, on June 2.

The members of the Hopkinton Rotary Club are involved in a number of projects serving the local community, most notably, awarding more than $15,000 in college scholarship in 2006 to local high school seniors. The club is part of Rotary International, an organization of business and professionals united worldwide, who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.
