“Summer Serenade,” a small standard flower show, is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 25, from 1 to 5 p.m., in the Hooksett Public Library Community Room. The event is free and is sponsored by the Hooksett Garden Club.
The club invites all amateur gardeners to enter a flowering or foliage specimen from their gardens between 2 and 6 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 24. The displays will be judged by panels of certified National Garden Club judges. Bring two address labels for each entry card. Entry cards and display containers will be supplied. Call General Chairman Nan Veilleux for more information at 485-9134.
In addition to horticulture, the show will feature 16 colorful floral designs created by members of the club or invited guests. All designs will carry a musical song title tying them into the show theme name Summer Serenade.
“Blue Moon” will be in the traditional style design using all fresh flowers and staged on a white pedestal. “Chantilly Lace” will be a functional table tray design staged on a table top. “Red Sails in the Sunset” will be a small design staged in a white niche at eye level and “A Bicycle Built for Two” will be a creative design staged in a large niche.
Special exhibits will include an invitational display by the New Hampshire Orchid Society and a vermiculture display on red worm composting.
Club members have spent the past year taking design classes and preparing for the club’s first flower show. It was planned to celebrate of the club’s 10th anniversary, by reaching out to educate the public on both floral design and horticulture.
The club is a member of the National Garden Club, New England Region and the New Hampshire Federation of Garden Clubs, Inc. from which the club has received much expertise in planning the show.
