After 19 innings, Crusaders fall

BY SAPNA PATHAK

Despite dropping a 5-0, 19-inning decision to Spaulding in a Class L tournament first-round match-up, Memorial softball coach Dave Hedge had no regrets.

“We looked at this and saw we did everything right,” said Hedge. “They beat us. We didn’t beat ourselves.”

Starter Kerri Webb threw a beauty, allowing just three hits during the first 18 frames.

The Red Raiders put up the game’s only crooked number on five hits in their half of the inning, despite being outhit by Memorial, 17-8, in the game.

Memorial turned around an 0-4 start to the 2007 season and rattled off 13 wins to earn the seventh seed in the postseason. During the run, hurlers Webb and junior Sarah Murray of Auburn helped Memorial look like the state finalist it was in 2006.

Kelsey Desrochers led the Crusaders with four hits in the loss, while Murray, Sam Herbert, Martha Routos and Tina Brasley added two apiece. Catcher Kelsey Isham of Auburn called the game, helping Webb record 21 strikeouts.
