19th Annual "Maine Home, Remodeling & Garden Show" in February to offer hundreds of homeowner resources

Show to feature new “Green” seminars, chef demos, and “wallet-friendly” home options

The 19th annual “Maine Home, Remodeling & Garden Show”” will take place Feb 7-8 this year at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland.  This year’s event will feature over 170 diverse vendors, displays and artisans, over a dozen live demonstrations by well-known Maine chefs and confectioners, and several home seminars with a focus on Green and money-saving strategies.

As in past years, this year’s Maine Home, Remodeling & Garden show will offer the latest products and innovative techniques available today on the home and landscaping front.  Displays and vendor exhibits range from landscaping, swimming pools and kitchen design to house organization, solar energy systems, and Green design options.

“Our Portland show has gained a growing audience since we first launched it nearly two decades ago,” said Cynthia O’Connor, Co-Owner of Dickson & McGonigle, the event’s production firm.  “Our 2008 event drew nearly 6,000 attendees, and we’re expecting to match or exceed interest in our expanded Portland show this year.”

“Building, remodeling, and redecorating are always popular areas for people, whether they’ve just bought a new home or are wanting to spruce up their condo or apartment,” added Karla Ficker, O’Connor’s partner at Dickson & McGonigle.  “But at this year’s show, we’re not only offering cutting-edge resources and suggestions, but are really putting a greater emphasis on cost efficiencies and energy-saving alternatives.”

Over a dozen consumer-friendly seminars and clinics are scheduled to take place during both days of the event.  Topics include “Practical Tips for Getting Your House Warm and Cozy,” “Going Green Without Having to Build a New Home,” and “Eco-Friendly Color Trends for 2009.”  In addition, an impressive variety of landscape and artisan displays will be included, as well as informative displays by top-tier companies such as Maine Kitchen Design, The Closet Factory, Castle Kitchens, Vic’s Appliances, Wally J. Staples Builders, and Mainely Tubs.  Dozens of product samples and “giveaways” are planned for guests, as well.

This year’s “Meet the Chefs” series, a popular component of the Maine Home, Remodeling & Garden Show in recent years, will take place throughout both event days.  Scheduled chefs and sous-chefs include Bryan Dame from the Inn at Ocean’s Edge (Lincolnville), Esau Crosby from Solo Bistro (Bath), Chris Geer from Vignola and Cinque Terre (Portland), Rick Hirsch from Damariscotta River Grill (Damariscotta), and Dave French from Gritty McDuff’s (Portland).  Barbeque master Dennis Sherman, creator of authentic, Texas-style barbeque sauces and rubs from “DennyMike’s ’Cue Stuff” in Maine, will share barbeque tips for both indoor and outdoor grilling.  Margaret Salt McLellan, winner of the 2008 Maine Lobster Chef of the Year competition, will be featured, as well.

O’Connor and Ficker produce well-attended Home & Garden shows in Maine and New Hampshire each year.  The team has earned its reputation for coordinating home and garden events which consistently prove to be major draws among New Englanders.

In addition to the Portland show, Dickson & McGonigle annually welcome thousands of visitors to its “Seacoast Home & Garden” three-day show in Durham, New Hampshire (to take place March 27th, 28th and 29th of this year at the Whittemore Center Arena), and to its “Northern New England Home, Garden & Flower Show” (scheduled for May 15th, 16th and 17th of this year at Maine’s Fryeburg Fairgrounds).
