October Schedule of Events at the Currier Museum of Art

MANCHESTER, NH— The Currier Museum of Art presents together for the first time Andy Warhol's paintings, prints, drawings, and photographs of political figures in the exhibition Andy Warhol: Pop Politics, which opens September 27 and runs through January 4, 2009. To celebrate this exhibition, the museum presents a wide variety of Warhol-inspired events, along with our regular offerings of child, family, and adult programs and classes. The museum's entrance is located at 150 Ash Street and parking is available in the new parking lot. Museum hours are Sunday, Monday, Wednesday - Friday 11a.m. – 5 p.m, Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., open the first Thursday of each month 11 a.m – 8 p.m., and closed Tuesday. Admission to the museum is always free for children 17 and under, and every Saturday from 10 a.m. – noon admission is free to everyone.

The Currier Art Center offers art classes and camps for all ages. The Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Zimmerman House is open and ticketed tours are available with reservations.

Zimmerman House ticketed tours
Take a tour of the Zimmerman House and learn more about this Frank Lloyd Wright treasure!

A regular Zimmerman House Tour provides visitors with a 1 ½ - 2 hour tour of the house with more details about the Zimmermans, life in the 1950s and 60s, and the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Those tours are offered Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 2 p.m., Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m; and Sundays at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Zimmerman House public tours are free for museum members.

Then there are also 1 ½ - 2 hour Focus Tours of the Zimmerman House in which docents and staff examine specific, changing topics connected to the house, the Zimmermans, or the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright. Focus Tours are offered periodically on Sundays at 3 p.m.  Zimmerman House public tours are free for museum members.

Public Guided Tours
Tours are offered daily, and highlight either the museum's permanent collection or the current special exhibition. Public tours are free with museum admission. Welcome to the Currier: Highlights of the Collection tour times are: Saturdays at 11:30 a.m., Sundays at 1 p.m., and the First Thursday of the month at 5:30 p.m. Andy Warhol: Pop Politics tour times are Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 12:30 p.m.

Exhibition - Andy Warhol: Pop Politics
September 27, 2008 – January 4, 2009
Andy Warhol: Pop Politics will present together for the first-time Warhol's paintings, prints, drawings, and photographs of political figures. Timed to coincide with the 2008 presidential election, this exhibition will offer a thought-provoking and entertaining look at the leaders who shaped the twentieth century through the eyes of Pop artist Andy Warhol. Exhibition is free with museum admission. Bring a non-perishable food item and receive $1 off admission. Food will be donated to the New Horizons Food Pantry in Manchester, NH.

Currier Art Center: Fall Term
September 29 – December 13
The Currier Art Center offers classes for every age and ability level. Art Foundations for Children provides classroom art experiences for children from ages 3 to 10 through a largely multimedia approach, while ArtVentures for Preteens and Art School for Teens and Adults concentrate on the needs of older students through an emphasis on specific disciplines and materials. "The Four Seasons" at the Zimmerman House
Thursday, October 2 at 5 p.m.
Music was a passion and great influence on Frank Lloyd Wright and his clients, Lucille and Isadore Zimmerman. "The Four Seasons" evenings at the Zimmerman House allow visitors to share in this interest. Each season, the museum will host an evening of refreshments at the museum, tours of the Zimmerman House, and live music in the house's garden room. Reservations for "The Four Season" at the Zimmerman House include museum admission and are $15 for museum members, and $25 for non-members. First Thursday: The Factory
Thursday, October 2 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Explore your creative potential on the first Thursday of each month! Each First Thursday program provides a great place to socialize or network after-hours, offering food and drinks tied to the evening's theme and entertaining programming that exposes the audience to a wide range of cultural experiences Today, Hang out at Warhol's studio¬–the Factory–to film your 15 seconds of fame and create Warhol-style prints and t-shirts of your candidate for the upcoming presidential election. T-shirts will be available for $10. Warhol-inspired cocktails and appetizers will also be available for purchase in the café.

Art Center Children and Parent Workshop: A Day to Play in Clay - Witches and Wizards
Saturday, October 4 from 1 – 3 p.m.
Using coils and a variety of other hand building techniques, children ages 5 – 12 and their parents will create a whimsical, magical figurine of a witch or wizard. Projects will be glazed and fired. (Materials provided.) Cost for this one-day workshop is $40 for 1 parent/child, or $55 for 2 children. Art Center Workshop: Wall Drawing in Colored Pencil
Saturday, October 11 & 18 from noon - 4 p.m.
Preteens and Teens will be inspired by the Sol Lewit mural in the Currier Museum as they join artist John O'Shaughnessy for this intensive two-day mural project at the Art Center. Students will be charged to create a large mural for the Art Center second floor in colored pencil. From basic design to finished piece, students will have their hands in the creation of a semi-permanent mural. Cost for this two-day workshop is $80. Family Saturday: Hats
Saturday, October 11 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Spend some quality family time at the Currier every second Saturday of the month. Participate in hands-on art activities, go on a guided family gallery walk (11:30 a.m.), visit the Discovery Gallery, or use a family gallery guide. Museum admission is free from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Art Center Children and Parent Workshop: Weave Together
Sunday, October 12 from 1 – 4 p.m.
Parents and children, ages 6 and up, will learn to weave a memorable tapestry in this beginner workshop. Students will choose threads of vibrant color and rich texture to create a special piece of art. At the end of class, students will follow the instructor, Cheryl Holbert, into the museum where they will discover and appreciate the fiber works on display. No weaving experience is required, and materials are provided. Cost for this one-day workshop is $45 for 1 parent/child, or $60 for 2 children. New Parent Gallery Talks: Art and Nature – The Hudson River School
Thursday, October 16 from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Has your new baby reduced your vocabulary to coos and other nonsensical words? These gallery talks are design for new parents (with baby in tow) to get a personalized tour of the museum. So pack up the baby stroller and stop by for some much needed adult conversation. These talks are offered every third Thursday of the month and are free with museum admission.

Art Center Workshop: Comics in the Museum
Saturday, October 18 from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Preteens and teens are invited to create bold new comics inspired by the museum's collection! Students will bring original voices and action out of the museum's great works of art – old and new – and work their creations into a self-published mini-comic book. No comics experience required and materials will be provided. Cost for this one-day workshop is $60. Drawing in the Galleries
Sunday, October 19 from 1 – 3 p.m.
Enjoy drawing? Come to the Currier and sketch amongst the works of art on view. Art educators will be available to offer advice and encouragement. Pencils and paper will be provided, or bring your own.

Distinguished Artists Concert Series – Ursula Oppens, Pianist
Sunday, October 19, tour at 1 pm, concert at 2 pm
Award-winning, Grammy-nominated Ursula Oppens will perform pieces by Romantic composers such as Schumann and Chopin, and works by contemporary American composers William Bolcom and Elliott Carter. A museum tour of related works of art will precede the performance. This concert was coordinated in consultation with Jocelyn Bolle, and is generously funded in part by Dr. David Stahl in memory of Dr. Barbara Stahl. An Image in the Making
Monday, October 20 at 7 p.m.
At the New Hampshire Institute of Politics, 100 Saint Anselm Drive, Manchester, NH
Political reporter and Director of the New Hampshire Institute of Politics, Jennifer Donahue, will moderate a panel of Saint Anselm College faculty and a special guest as they discuss political image-making and the bearing it has on presidential elections. Sharon Matt Atkins, curator of Andy Warhol: Pop Politics will begin the discussion with a brief presentation about the exhibition.

October is Art Beyond Sight Awareness Month
Monday, October 20
The Currier is partnering with the New Hampshire State Library Talking Book Services to celebrate Art Beyond Sight Awareness Month in October. Art Beyond Sight is an international initiative to call public attention to the need and benefits of making art and visual culture accessible to people with vision loss and other disabilities. The Currier will be providing a descriptive tour of Andy Warhol: Pop Politics on October 20 to Talking Book patrons with the goal of establishing a long-term partnership. Art Center Warhol Workshop: Political Portraits: Silk-screening and Drawing
Saturday, October 25 from 1 - 4 p.m.
Students will become inspired by the Currier's Exhibition Andy Warhol: Pop Politics when they capture the look and feel of Warhol's imagery using their own selection of political portraits. Teens and adults are invited to explore Warhol inspired imagery during this special workshop and using water-based silkscreen processes, colored pencil drawing on large sheets of paper, will create their own masterpiece. Cost for this one-day workshop is $40.
