Witty words, merry music, and audacious art for First Friday

Poets, Artists, and Musicians Unite at Club Cannon in Downtown Peterborough

Club Cannon is celebrating September's First Friday with an evening of Poetry, Music, and Art. On Friday, September 5th, local teen and adult artists, acoustic musicians, and poets will show off their skills at Club Cannon's first Poetry Night.

The evening will feature several guest artists, poets, and musicians, as well as providing "open mic" time for poets who want to give their skills a try in front of a friendly, supportive crowd. The evening is meant to help spread awareness of Club Cannon's mission; to provide a safe, engaging, drug and alcohol free environment where teens and young adults can find their own voices and express themselves without the worries of bullying and peer pressure.

"I'm extremely proud to be organizing this night as my first event with Club Cannon," said John Sefel, who recently took over as Club Cannon's Teen Center Coordinator. "The mix of guest poets as mentors, acoustic music, and open mic poetry, all surrounded by local art - it's the perfect environment to showcase just WHY we do what we do, and to prove that everyone has something to say and some way to say it. We are hoping teens and adults will both come out to be part of the festivities, bridging the often challenging age divide." Sefel joined Club Cannon last week after stepping down as the Producing Artistic Director of Manchester's Acting Loft Academy of Performing Arts. He is a member of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, an award winning director/playwright, and an adjunct faculty member at Chester College of New England.

Club Cannon's Poetry Night will run on Friday, September 5th from 6pm - 9pm. Sefel says there are still openings for anyone who is interested. "Some slots have already filled," he said, "but I still have room for a few more musicians, teen and adult artists, and definitely amateur poets who want to give it a try." Anyone who is interested in signing up should contact Sefel at Club Cannon by calling 603-924-5718, or by emailing him at john@cpcnh.org.

Club Cannon is the Teen Center wing of Creating Positive Change (CPC), a community-based coalition of people and organizations working together to address substance abuse, and the problems associated with it. CPC is both a catalyst and conduit for activities, information and advocacy that promote and support healthy choices around the use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs in the communities of eastern Cheshire and western Hillsborough Counties in New Hampshire. Club Cannon serves teens from the towns of Antrim, Bennington, Dublin, Francestown, Greenfield, Greenville, Hancock, Jaffrey, Mason, New Ipswich, Peterborough, Rindge, Sharon and Temple, and hosts events for various ages throughout the year, including the extremely popular annual Monadnock Battle of the Bands competition. Club Cannon offers "drop-in" hours Tues-Saturday for local teens to visit, socialize, do homework, or just "be a teen" in a safe, substance-free environment. Club Cannon is located in the GAR Building at 40 Grove Street, in downtown Peterborough, NH. More information about both CPC and Club Cannon can be found at http://www.cpcnh.org
