Ice Rescue at Greenwood Lake

The staff and faculty at Lifesaving Resources is especially proud of the actions of Alexander Nicholas and that of the other members of the Greenwood Lake Police and Fire Department personnel.  Alexander Nicholas was a 2006 graduate of the Lifesaving Resources' Ice Rescue Train-the-Trainer Academy conducted at Boston University's Sargent Center for Outdoor Education in Hancock, New Hampshire.  Alexander was authorized as an Ice Rescue Instructor on behalf of the Village of Greenwood Lake Police Department and was authorized to conduct Ice Rescue Awareness, Operations, and Technician level courses for First Responders in the Greenwood Lake area.

Greenwood Lake - Police rescued four fishermen last Thursday, March 6, after two of them fell through the melting ice on Greenwood Lake.

Yuri Timchenko of Brooklyn was ice fishing with three friends about 200 feet from shore when he fell through the ice; he was rescued by Greenwood Lake Police officer and volunteer firefighter Al Nicholas.

Another man fell through the ice trying to reach police and was pulled from the water.

The two other fishermen walked down a few yards and where rescued by police and Greenwood Lake fighterfighter Anthony Alfano and Greenwood Lake Det. John Hanson.

The four men received medical attention at the scene, but refused to be taken to the hospital.

Greenwood Lake police, firefighters and ambulance corps members, as well as Warwick Police, helped at the scene.(Photos by Ed Bailey).
