Rob Cathcart and Tom Foote didn’t have to say goodbye following the football season after all.
Cathcart, who coached Foote during his football career at Goffstown High School, stepped in to coach the wrestling team this season as well, where the two have again found success.
On the football field, Foote was named a member of the allstate team and was also recently named to the Shrine team roster. The senior also picked up where he left off last year on the wrestling mats.
The Grizzlies were left without a head coach early in the season, and with the help of assistant coach Keith Detjen, Cathcart has taken over and helped lead Goffstown to a 5-1 record in dual meets.
“I think because of (being without a head coach), there was less discipline and less dedication than there had been in the past,” said Cathcart. “Trying to get that so it was back heading in the right direction was one of the challenges. We have that now.”
At the Timberlane Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 24, the Grizzlies placed seventh, with Foote earning first place in the heavyweight division.
Nick Wheelock took second place in the 135-pound weight class, Eric Moran grabbed third at 130 pounds, and Mal Shea appeared ready to make a deep run in the tournament before withdrawing with a hand injury.
“It’s the best we’ve wrestled as a team in a tournament,” said Cathcart. “Almost everyone had at least one win and wrestled some of their best individual matches as well.”
Cathcart has turned to his veterans to step in and assist the team’s young talent, with multiple freshmen and sophomores finding spots in the starting rotation.
Freshmen Zach Schofield, Mike Sarette and Wiley Cathcart have all contributed, with Sarette placing first at the freshman state tournament in the 112- pound weight class.
Cathcart said he isn’t surprised by the progress of the Grizzlies.
“The stepping up of the younger wrestlers and of the senior group has made me proud to get to this point,” said Cathcart. “It’s more that than being surprised. It could have gone the other direction, but I knew them well enough that I had confidence in them.”
