After years of restoration work and thousands of hours spent by dozens of volunteers, the second-floor theater in the Grasmere Town Hall is scheduled to reopen this spring.
It will be made available to the public again after being closed for more than 10 years, and it will once again be used as a community meeting place.
The current phase of work includes putting the finishing touches on the theater, installing lighting, refinishing the hardwood floor and restenciling the walls with reproductions of the original artwork. Much of this work is funded by the Grasmere Town Hall Capital Campaign Fund, which Goffstown voters set aside for this project in 2005, but just authorized the Historic District Commission to access in 2008. Only a portion of this money will go toward the current round of restoration work. The rest will be saved for the final phase of work.
The stairwell and front doors will also be restored, due to a certified local government grant fron the New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources.
Initially, the room will be able to accomodate up to 50 people. When the final phase of reconstruction is complete sometime in the next few years, the theater will once again be able to function at its full capacity of 225 people.
The final phase of work will see the construction of an el on the back of the building with an elevator, stairs, additional bathroom facilities and a storage room.
