After being on the road since the middle of August, Recycled Percussion has returned to its Goffstown roots.
The junk rock band gave a high-energy performance to a hyper, high-spirited student body at Goffstown High School on Thursday, Dec. 4. It is here that the group decided to film part of their second DVD to be internationally distributed.
The difference between their first DVD, “Live At Allegheny,” and this one? This newest DVD was mostly filmed by students at both Goffstown and Laconia high schools using handheld mini- DV and high-definition cameras.
“The idea was to put the spotlight on the kids,” said Todd Griffin, DJ, keyboardist and vocalist for the band. “The idea is to see what people enjoy filming, what part of the show they enjoy. It’s cool to get the perspective of the crowd.”
Throughout the concert, the camera crew could be seen roving about the stage, sometimes filming from giant bean bags in the wings, and other times lying on the floor to get a more unique camera angle.
According to Goffstown High School Principal Francis J. McBride, five of the students who filmed the group attend the Manchester School of Technology for video production. The other three students were chosen by the student council.
“I love the idea that they’re having some of our kids film and let some help set up,” said McBride. “I think it’s nice to be able to expose the kids to this (group).”
Students who helped film and move equipment will also be given credit on the DVD itself. Recycled Percussion got its start at Goffstown High School in 1994, when the group’s drummer and creator, Justin Spencer, was trying to win a talent show at the school. At the time, the group came in second to a juggling act.
“When it began, it was basically four kids on buckets with no light or sound system,” said Griffin.
Now that the group has become a nationally known act touring colleges and other various locations nationwide, they decided to bring it back to Goffstown where it all started.
Introducing the band to the stage was the face of Jordan’s Furniture, Eliot Tatelman. A guest appearance was also made by the lead singer of the Maine-based Rustic Overtones, Dave Gunner.
During the show, band members also threw drumsticks out to the audience and shook hands after the show.
“We meet the people after every show,” said Griffin. “It’s important for us to give back to our fans.”
The other two Recycled Percussion band members include Jimmy Mags, also a Goffstown High School graduate, on guitar; and Ryan Vezina on drums. Recycled Percussion’s next performance will be Jan. 2 and 3 at the Palace Theatre in Manchester. The performance is at 8 p.m. both nights, and tickets are $26.
