Goffstown Main Street: Greeting goblins

BY ROBBIE GRADY

Why is it that fall flies by so fast? It seems like we were just beginning to notice the leaves turning, and now we’re raking them. The weather forecast is beginning to mention snow, heaven forbid! Meanwhile, thoughts of pumpkins turn from the weigh-offs of early fall to the jack-o-lanterns of mid-fall to the pies of late fall and the holidays.

Jack-o-lanterns and the fun of Halloween are on everyone’s mind this week. Is there a better place to celebrate Halloween than Goffstown?

We don’t think so!

Even though our pumpkin weekend is past, you can still find plenty of pumpkins in the area. Check out the carved giant pumpkin on the doorstep at Twisted Fender Collision Center. Patrick’s Country Restaurant is still sporting the line-up of carved pumpkins from the regatta weekend on their deck. And, of course, there’s Devriendt Farm’s annual pumpkin lighting to look forward to. It’s quite a sight, and we’re lucky to have a family farmstand right in our midst.

Keene’s pumpkin festival may have the most lit pumpkins, but our town certainly takes the prize for most imaginative carvings. We haven’t seen the pumpkin- headed water skier this year on Elm Street, but the street does boast a different scarecrow that will make you laugh this season.

Our friends at the Goffstown Public Library are organizing a party just for preschoolers on Friday morning at 10:30 a.m. Plenty of fun for your little ones, no doubt! Call 497-2102 to register.

We’re looking forward to the annual Halloween parade down Main Street on Friday afternoon. For those of you who are new to town, you must come and check it out at 1 p.m. on the 31st. Our three elementary schools: Maple Avenue, Bartlett and the Villa Augustina will be out in force strutting to the beat of the Goffstown High School marching band. We can’t wait to see what the school principals will choose as their costume theme this year. Find a spot on the Common for the best viewing.

This is the kind of event that really speaks to us of community spirit!

The highlight of Halloween is trick-or-treating, and this year, your ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggity beasties can join us on Main Street from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday evening.

We’re always amazed at the ingenuity of the costumes we see on the trick-or-treaters, and we hope you will come out and enjoy a safe evening with us. Drivers, please be aware of our little guests, and watch for them crossing the street. Parents, there are great checklists for costume safety everywhere you look, and we do encourage you to review them with your children prior to coming out.

The sidewalks get crowded, and we want everyone to be safe. If your children are old enough to come out without you, please remind them to use caution when crossing Main Street. Our wonderful downtown businesses are always generous.

We know that the huge crowds of trick-or-treaters can overwhelm the homeowners here in the Village. For the second year, Mandy Sutton has offered to coordinate a candy exchange. If you live out where there are no trick-or-treaters, and you wish to get in on the fun, you can help your neighbor by dropping off a bag of treats at the Goffstown Public Library by Friday afternoon. If you are a homeowner in the Village, and would like some help with extra goodies, call the Main Street office at 497- 9933, and we’ll hook you up with Mandy.

Have a safe and happy Halloween from all of us here on Main Street.
