They’re young. They’re having fun. And now they’re in the playoffs.
The Lady Grizzlies, with one game remaining, are currently 6- 13 on the season.
The record, however, is not indicative of the team’s hard work and dedication, said head coach Wake Stillman.
“With a youthful team like this you have a lot of bright moments, but with inexperience comes some mistakes that will cost you some games, too,” said the coach.
The 2008 Goffstown softball team has three seniors, five juniors, four sophomores and two freshmen.
Of those underclassmen, five start.
Sophomore Michelle Beaulieu plays second base, and classmates Tricia Larivee and Jenny Bartlett regularly patrol the outfield.
Freshmen Kaitlyn Johnson, a pitcher, and Brittany Neuman, the starting catcher, form a battery Stillman expects to pay dividends the next three years.
Still, while the team is young, senior Katie Ethier, who runs down balls in center field, and junior Ashley Gregory, who starts at shortstop, have used their positions as captains to help the younger players mature.
Juniors Maria Girardin, at third base, and Sara Chabot, a pitcher, also see regular playing time.
Others contributing this season include seniors Kate Gale and Amanda Schneider; juniors Lexe Turcotte and Julie Clark; and sophomore Molly Ward.
“We’ve had a hard time generating offense against good pitchers, so it’s been hard for us to score at times, but we’ve played a lot of teams close and have a couple wins against some pretty good teams.”
Goffstown’s marquee win this season came against 10-9 Nashua North, which was competing for a top-eight playoff seed and first-round home contest.
“We would have liked to have finished a little higher, but a modest goal, certainly for a young team like this, was just to be part of it,” said Stillman. “Now we’re in, and we’re going to have to compete against a pretty strong program. But hey, we’ve got a shot … Stranger things have happened.”
The Lady Grizzlies close the regular season on Thursday, May 29, at 15-3 Timberlane.
If they win, they’ll travel to Timberlane again as the No. 15 seed to open the playoffs on Wednesday, June 4. Should they lose, they’ll head to Salem to face the defending state champs.
