GHS, struggling now, gains valuable experience in early matches

BY RYAN O’CONNOR

For the present, *** Valliere watches and encourages their on-court development, knowing success is in the not-too-distant future.

The team currently includes one sophomore and four freshmen, and the Goffstown YMCA and Mountain View Middle School are now developing players for the high school program. In fact, sophomore Lindsay McPhail currently plays No. 1 for the Lady Grizzlies after starting at No. 6 last season.

Though she’s had her struggles competing against the elite in Class L, McPhail is building toward a future in that upper echelon, said Valliere.

“It’s been a big jump and a real challenge for her this season, being a sophomore playing No. 1,” said the coach. “But I expect her to get a few wins pretty soon and really be prepared for her junior and senior years, where I think she’s going to excel.”

Devan Caine and Katie Veilleux, who have rotated in the No. 6 spot and played No. 3 doubles, have shown plenty of potential as well.

“Our younger players are coming along and getting better every match,” said Valliere. “We’re building toward the future, but I also expect to get a few wins before the end of the season.”

The team currently is 0- 6, but three of those losses have come against Class L powers Central, Concord and Bishop Guertin.

Though 8-0 Londonderry remains on the schedule, Valliere said several winnable matches remain.

To that end, seniors Emma Groves and Annie Lepristie, the team’s No. 3 and No. 5, respectively, and juniors Jocelyn Cassidy, Emma Sobolov and Annie Makowiecki, the Nos. 2, 4 and 6 in that order, are improving as well. Each brings various degrees of experience to the court.

“They’re getting used to playing in Class L matches and they’re getting more competitive,” said Valliere.

McPhail and Cassidy play No. 1 doubles, Groves and Sobolov, the team’s co-captains, form the second team, and Lepresti and Makowiecki make up the No. 3 unit.

Freshmen Ali Scimone and Chandler Culveyhouse, though not currently playing, are expected to contribute in the future, said Valliere.

“All our freshman are pretty good athletes that play other sports and will hopefully improve during the offseason and can contribute next year,” he said.
