As the Grizzlies enter their third year with a boys lacrosse program and second year as a varsity team, coach Dave Moloney said all signs point to the squad continuing its progression as a competitive unit.
Though Goffstown is 0-2 on the young season, it played both opponents tight, losing on the road to Dover, 8-7, and Merrimack, 8-6. It’s an indication the team is gaining confidence, said Moloney.
“We’re doing the best we can, as far as competing with better teams, and we’re in every gameso far. Now we just need to get that mind-set together which will get us over the hurdle and help us win games,” he said. “That’s part of the transition as a program – learning how to win in those close situations at the end.” Last season, GHS won twice.
While depth may be an issue this year, Moloney said that won’t be a problem for long; strong feeder programs have been established at Mountain View Middle School and Goffstown Parks and Recreation.
Prior to starting the program at Goffstown, Moloney spent 10 years as Saint Anselm’s coach. Though time restraints forced him to leave his college post, he said Goffstown High School offered an opportunity for him to continue coaching while building what he expects will be a top Division II program.
Leading the Grizzlies this season are seniors Kiah Colbert, an attackman, and Scott Turgeon, a midfielder. They are joined by junior goalie Connor Nolan and midfielder Brendon Shearin as captains this season.
Junior Jimmy Walker leads the defense, while sophomore attacker Bryan Bourque and midfielder A.J. Plourde are expected to contribute plenty, said Moloney.
