Epsom man arrested for 1976 child rapes

BY MATT SCHOOLEY

An Epsom man arrested for the alleged assault of three minors 30 years ago has been extradited to Massachusetts, where he awaits trial.

Robert White, 54, had a warrant for his arrest in Wareham, Mass., but police did not know where he was living until Epsom police learned on Aug. 2 he was living with his son in town. Epsom Police Chief Wayne Preve said his department received an anonymous tip and, after following up on the call, arrested White.

The three alleged assaults came between August 1976 and June 1977, according to Wareham Police Lt. Irving Wallace, who said one of the victims was 11 and two of them were 6 at the time, when all four were living together.

On Oct. 3 at Brockton Superior Court, White was indicted on 17 counts that included seven for rape of a child, one charge of rape, six charges of indecent assault and battery on a child younger than 14, and single counts of assault and battery, assault and battery by means of dangerous weapon and threats to commit a crime.

“The only involvement we had was that we received an anonymous call, and the officer followed up on that,” said Preve. “He made calls to Wareham to verify he did have a warrant. We looked through our computer system and got the address to where his son lived. We made the arrest.”

White was scheduled for a pretrial hearing on Thursday, Dec. 4.
