No accident – Concord woman faces attempted murder charge

BY RYAN O’CONNOR

After more than two months of investigation, a Concord woman has been indicted on an attempted murder charge stemming from a head-on collision in Bow.

The accident occurred Dec. 2, when Carrie Drake, 37, allegedly swerved her Chevrolet Lumina into ongoing traffic while traveling southbound on Route 3A.

The investigation, said Bow police Detective David Girard, revealed that Rick Staples of Manchester was in the passenger seat of Drake’s vehicle when she crossed the center line and collided head-on with a Mack dump truck.

Staples spent more than a month in the intensive care unit at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. He was recently released after being treated for serious and potentially permanent injuries, said Girard.

Drake and the truck driver suffered less serious injuries.

Drake, of 203 Loudon Road in Concord, was indicted Friday, Feb. 16, by the Merrimack County grand jury.

Bow police worked the investigation with New Hampshire State Police and New Hampshire Division of Motor Vehicle Highway Patrol.

As a result, Girard said the state intends to prove Drake’s driving into the oncoming Mack truck was to cause Staples’  death.

“After the accident, an allegation was made that the accident was a purposeful attempt to cause harm to him,” said Girard.

The investigation, including several weeks of interviews, revealed further evidence that the accident was intentional, he said.

Drake will be arraigned in Merrimack County Superior Court; the date has not been set.
