News and Information for the Town of Bow

Find the flamingos and get to know Bow

BY MATT SCHOOLEY

Bow doesn’t exactly have the climate for the large pink birds that are common in tropical locations, but the Baker Free Library has residents on the lookout for flamingos around town.

The town’s library is sponsoring a contest that will reward keen-eyed residents with a sweet movie treat.

June 12 was the first installment of the weekly “Where in Bow are Moe and Joe Flamingo?” which aims to raise interest in the library and also help patrons get to know their town a little better.

Each week, a photo is posted of Moe and Joe Flamingo in front of an unkown location in town. Visitors to the library are given the chance to guess where the flamingos are located, and submit those guesses into a raffle. The winning guess chosen each week is given a box of movie theater candy, going along with the theme of another contest that gives away movie passes.

“The best part is that there is an increased awareness of the community,” said Jen Leger, library assistant at Baker Free Library. “It makes you stop and think and be aware of the special landmarks of Bow, and a little of the history of Bow.”

Some of the previous locations have been the rock wall near the football field at Bow High School, White Rock Senior Living and the gazebo near the Community Building.

Leger said about 25 residents have already participated in the contest, which will last until Aug. 14.

“Some weeks are trickier than others,” said Leger. “Like the high school, for example. Unless you were a high school student you may not have been able to figure that one out.”

In addition to checking out books, Leger said the library is important because it brings residents together.

“There is a lot of history with the library and the town. It’s a place where people can come and be with the community,” she said. “There are fewer and fewer places to do that, and the libary is a place where people can come and gather.”

Leger’s advice for winning the contest is simple.

“Be aware of your surroundings when you’re out and about in Bow,” she said. “Stop in and enter the raffle and you’ll have a chance to win.”
