Deep Bedford High golf team still on perfect course

BY MATT SCHOOLEY

A wet Manchester Country Club course slowed down the ball, but it didn’t slow the Bedford High School golf team.

With victories over Hanover, St. Thomas and Souhegan on Saturday, Sept. 12, the Bulldogs improved to 15-0.

Jake Nutter led all golfers with a 35, while Andrew Weeks carded a 42, Nate Larrivee finished with a 39 and Ryan Tombs and Max Lawless each fired a 49.

For Bedford, however, the round of the day came from A.J. Spagnuolo, who shot a 38.

“A.J. really saved the day for us,” said head coach Joel St. Laurent, who added that the weather did have an impact.

“It’s all about being physically prepared and knowing mentally that you may get some mud on the ball, and the greens may be a bit slower.”

Bedford handed Hanover its second loss of the year, with the other coming earlier in the season courtesy of the Bulldogs. Last year, Bedford fell just short of the state title, finishing the year as the Class I runner up.

St. Laurent said he believes having come out with a win despite difficult conditions could pay off for his team in the postseason because of the mental toughness the players gained.

“You have to expect a little adversity each time you tee up,” said St. Laurent. “You have to be able to overcome it and minimize the damage. It’s just a matter of making the right choices. If you hit a less than perfect shot, you need to bounce back and find the quickest way to the hole.”

The Bulldog mentor said while Nutter is the anchor of the team’s rotation, Weeks has been a major key to Bedford’s success to this point, showing vast improvement entering his senior year.

Weeks turned in a 38 in the team’s previous match on Sept. 8, the second-best individual score out of the four teams, one stroke off Nutter’s 37. Depth has been a strength for Bedford this year, and St. Laurent said his players aren’t only trying to beat their opponents’ scores when they tee up each match.

“They’re all capable of shooting under par, and they push each other to raise the bar,” said St. Laurent. “There’s a lot of competition, especially in the top three. It’s been fun to watch and the reason we’ve been so successful. They’re all friends, but there are some bragging rights on the line too.”
