Felony charge in dragging incident

By JILLIAN JORGENSEN

State police have charged a Massachusetts woman with a felony after she left the scene of an accident that seriously injured a motorcyclist.

Brittany Lacourse, 19, of Lowell, Mass., was arrested at Troop B in Bedford after she turned herself in on Aug. 27. She was charged with felony conduct after an accident.

The arrest came after Trooper Brian Viglione, who investigated the crash, interviewed Robert Heywood, 50, of Barrington, the driver of the motorcycle.

Heywood recounted being dragged by Lacourse’s car after she sideswiped him on the on-off ramp at Route 101 and the F.E. Everett Turnpike. He said she was talking on her cell phone during the accident.

“This was clearly negligence. This wasn’t an accident,” he said the day after the Aug. 20 crash. “I’m not licensed to reconstruct accidents, but clearly, this is just ignorance.”

Lacourse drove away after the collision, according to Heywood and the police. Her mother later reported the accident that night.

Heywood sustained a broken knee and lacerations after being dragged by the car for a short distance before crashing to the ground. He was treated for his injuries at Elliot Hospital in Manchester.

He said that at first he could not move, and did not know how badly he had been injured.

“It was pretty traumatic,” he said. “I watched my life flash before my eyes.”

His 2006 Harley Davidson Softail sustained about $6,000 in damage, Heywood said.

“The only thing I can say is I hope she learns from it,” Heywood said. “I’ll lick my wounds. I’ll learn from it.”
