Bedford High School head coach sees physical, mental strides from young charges

BY MATT SCHOOLEY

Kurt Hines is hoping physics and football go hand in hand.

As the Bedford High School football program prepares to enter its second varsity season, Hines said he believes his team’s offense is ready to produce after failing to score more than 14 points in any game during its inaugural campaign.

“Last year the struggles offensively were more about the laws of physics,” said Hines. “The other teams were bigger, faster and stronger.”

This summer the high school hosted a football camp that included players from schools such as the University of New Hampshire and Boston College to help teach the 43 athletes in attendance.

Hines said the combination of the camp with a year-long weight-training program should boost his players in their matchups with 2009’s opponents.

Last year’s athletes were frequently asked to play for the freshman or JV team in addition to their varsity contributions, meaning an increased work load.

“We had more than half our kids who had to play two games a week. That really took a toll on kids’ bodies,” said Hines. “It’ll be nice with four full grades to have kids play only one game each week and focus all their energy on that.”

One of the position battles for the Bulldogs comes at quarterback, where three players vie for the starting role.

Tyler Weber and Max Hendrickx are two returning players hoping to earn snaps from center Dan Constantino, and Kindell Benton, who transferred to the school this year from North Carolina, is also involved in the competition.

“I want to build our program to the point where we have competition ideally at every position,” he said. “Last year kids were handed positions out of necessity, while this year more kids are starting to have to fight for their positions. We have a very talented freshman class that has also helped the older guys realize there are younger guys breathing down their neck.”

Running back Jordan Garron returns to the team as a threat on the offensive side of the ball. Weber, should the quarterback role fall to a teammate, should expect to see time at the wide receiver and tight end positions.

When Bedford’s coaching staff watched film from last year, Hines said the mentors did not see consistent all-out effort, snap after snap, something the coach knows his team must do to win.

“We’re still going to be outsized by other teams, but no one can take away the hustle from us,” said Hines. “With the kids we have coming back, we’re not just trying to compete, but win a few games.”
