The Bedford Barracudas winning streak and recordbreaking performances continued against the Londonderry RAYS at the Bedford Memorial Pool on July 22 in Bedford. The Bedford swim team captured first place in 56 of 85 events, including 17 of the 20 team relays.
In the girls 8-and-under 25-yard freestyle, Lindsey Wagner broke a 23-year-old record, outpacing the competition in 15.31 seconds.
Mark Keiffer also set an individual record among the 8- and-under boys in the 25-yard breaststroke, besting a 2001 record by 0.2 seconds. For the second time in as many weeks, the boys 13- and 14- year-old relay team – Jamie Lutze, Zachary Grimmett, Grant Drukker and Nathan Schappler – set a new record of 2 minutes, 5.09 seconds, shaving 2.09 seconds off the previous record.
In the first event of the meet, Cassie Berger set the tone by winning the girls 11- and 12-year-old 200 free.
Heather Luby, 9, won the 50 free, and Abigail Gaiser took the 9- and 10-year-old 50 breaststroke. In the 11- and 12-year-old bracket, Tobi- Lyn Gaiser captured the 50 breaststroke, and Maddie Speaker won the 50 free. Rae Knedeisen earned gold in the girls 15- to 19-year-old 100- yard butterfly.
For the boys, Jacob Statires won the 8-and-under 25 fly. Daniel Johnson finished first in the boys 9- and 10-year-old 100 free, and Chris Alvino captured the boys 15- to 19- year-old 100 breaststroke.
The combination of Austin Drukker, Dean Drukker, Grant Drukker, and Scott Drukker captured three individual and five team relay first-place finishes and contributed 58 points to the Barracudas’ total.
Also contributing to the team’s success were athletes swimming in the 13- and 14- year-old age groups. Marcus Graves won the 100 and 200 free events. David Johnson scored points in the 100-yard backstroke, Chandler Tramosch swam the 50 and 100 free, Riley Faszewski scored in the 100 breaststroke, and Nathan Schappler tallied points in the 50 free and 100 fly. For the girls, AB Soterion and Makayla Sterling each swam competitively in the 50 free and 100 breaststroke events, while Sarah Barrett scored in the 100 back.
The 2009 season concludes this weekend with the Granite State Swimming Association Championship Meet, Aug. 1 and 2, at the Jenny Thompson Pool in Dover.
