A fire truck from the Bedford Fire Department was involved in a crash on the F.E. Everett Turnpike southbound in Bedford on Tuesday, July 21.
According to Bedford Fire Chief Scott Wiggin, the accident occurred while Engine No. 4 was responding to another crash involving a state trooper in the northbound lane of the highway.
To reach the accident in the northbound lane, the engine had to travel south to the crossover in front of the Bedford Toll Plaza.
As firefighters approached the area, a state police cruiser had stopped traffic in two lanes going northbound so the vehicle could merge into the northbound lanes. As the truck started turning, it was struck in the left rear compartment area, causing minor wheel-well damage.
The engine was removed from service at the scene.
Wiggin said air bags were deployed in the other vehicle and there was front-end damage to the car. The car was towed from the scene and the victim was brought to Elliot Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.
“Because the engine was place out of service due to the accident, we requested a Merrimack engine to go to state police accident,” said Wiggin. “We then requested an ambulance to fire truck accident to transport that victim.”
Wiggin said the accident involving the fire engine was cleared by 9 a.m., though it did cause a traffic backup.
“It was just during that time of day that one little blip backs traffic up,” said Wiggin.
Engine No. 4 was put back into service later in the day.
