The foundation for the Bedford Little League team is solid, and the rest of the house is in pretty good shape too.
With a 6-2 victory over Goffstown on Monday, July 13, the 11- and 12-year-old all-stars advanced to the semifinals of the District 1 losers’ bracket, led by solid outings from two of the squad’s leaders.
Kyle Andersson tossed a complete game and scattered three hits while striking out four in addition to sparking two of his team’s run-scoring rallies and driving in a run to help his cause.
Ryan Bliss, who normally pitches when Andersson is not on the mound, drove in a run of his own during the win over Goffstown.
“They’ve got super bats, and they’re our two ace pitchers,” said Bedford manager Henry Veilleux. “Clearly they’re the foundation of the team.”
Following the win over Goffstown, Bedford advanced to take on Bow in a game that was scheduled to take place on Wednesday, July 15.
If Bedford overcomes Bow, it would advance to the finals of the losers’ bracket against Salem National in a game slated for Thursday, July 16.
During the game against Goffstown, Bedford hopped out to an early lead, scoring one run in the top of the opening frame.
Nick Angelini led off with a triple before Andersson pushed him home with an RBI groundout.
Goffstown struck back quickly, tying the game on a solo home run in the bottom of the second, but Bedford recaptured the advantage in the top of the third after Andersson led off with a single, Bliss reached on an error and Brett Filza chased them both home with a two-run double.
Bliss brought home another run in the fourth and then scored along with Andersson in the top of the sixth to cap the scoring.
While Veilleux is getting plenty of production from his two stars, it’s the depth of the team that has most impressed him.
“Everyone is hitting the ball really well,” he said. “We’ve had just about everybody contributing. We’re getting fantastic defensive plays, even from some of our subs. That’s critical if you’re going to win these kind of games.”
First baseman Tyler O’Brien stopped at least one Goffstown run from going on the board when he made a diving stop of a hard-hit ground ball behind the bag, and third baseman Ryan Lang made four solid plays at the hot corner.
Veilleux said he likes his team’s chances if it is able to advance to face Windham, which is waiting for an opponent after coming out on top in the winners’ bracket.
“We play better when we play a lot,” he said. “Windham has to keep their team up and sharp after a week off. We’ll just keep playing ball. We’re having fun, we keep winning, and it makes them believe in themselves.”
