Bedford teen goes to Mexico for geography team

Milan Sandhu, 15, of Bedford, was selected by National Geographic to be part of a three-person U.S. team to represent the U.S. at the National Geographic World Geography Championship in Mexico City to be held from July 11 to 16.

The competition is held every two years in different locations around the world and the kids are chosen from the top 10 finalists from the national level of the geography bee in Washington, D.C.

Sandhu won the New Hampshire State Bee in 2007 and 2008 and represented New Hampshire in Washington, D.C., both of those years.

Sandhu made it into the top 10 finalists and came in fifth overall in the country last year in 2008 at the national level and therefore was chosen to be on the U.S. team.

The other two kids are from this year’s top 10 finalists – one being from Texas and one from Michigan.

They will all fly out together, accompanied by a chaperone for the entire trip assigned by National Geographic. They will represent the U.S. at this competition and will compete against about 20 other countries from around the world.

The final competition will be hosted by Alex Trebek.

The 60 kids from around the world will be treated by National Geographic to tours of historic sites, Aztec ruins and museums around Mexico City.

It is an all-expenses-paid trip.

The kids will also exchange gifts from their respective states/countries with the other kids on the final formal banquet evening.
