Top-ranked Trinity nine ousted in state semifi nals

BY MARK NATALE

The Trinity boys baseball team ended an otherwise dream season with a frightful loss to Alvirne in the Class L semifinals on June 10.

“Tonight, Dylan (Clark) wasn’t sharp, Garrett (Cole) wasn’t sharp, and our hitting wasn’t on. Put those three together and you get a 12-3 loss,” said Trinity coach, Ed Poisson.

The Pioneers, who closed the year with a sterling 19- 3 mark, suffered two regular- season setbacks – to last year’s state champion, Goffstown, on May 4, and this year’s state champ, Keene, on May 18.

No. 1-ranked Trinity flew through the first two rounds of the playoffs, winning games against No. 16 Pinkerton, 8-1, and No. 9 Timberlane, 3-1.

Senior Dylan Clark, set to attend Elon University on a baseball scholarship next year, took a no-hitter into the seventh inning of the first-round game.

Clark and fellow senior, Garret Cole of Bedford, who plans to attend UMass-Lowell, led the team in pitching throughout the year. Another senior, Sean Lyons of Bedford, coming off a serious leg injury suffered during the football season, was a solid reliever for the Pioneers.

Junior Connor Lyons and his brother, Sean, along with senior Ricky Fosher of Hooksett, helped lead an offense that averaged more than six runs per game.

Also contributing to the balanced team were senior Dave Danielson and junior Nick Nalette, both of Goffstown.

“There was very good team chemistry, and our morale for the season was high,” said Fosher. “We knew we had a good shot at the title.”

After the loss to fifth-seeded Alvirne, former athletics director Patrick Smith and current AD Gary Leonard made their way through the dugout, shaking the hands of each player and helping boost spirits.

“We may have lost, but we lost as a team. There weren’t any arguments in the dugout and even in the end I feel that our team was able to crack a few jokes and stay positive towards each other,” said Danielson.

Many of the players compared the Alvirne game to their lopsided loss to the Blackbirds earlier in the year.

“I’d compare this game to Keene because it was contentious to start, and then we just let it get to our heads,” said Connor Lyons.

Others felt the team didn’t live up to the expectations of the season.

“This loss was a tough one to swallow because there is no more tomorrow for us to redeem ourselves, and (the Alvirne game) did not reflect the hard work or what we were all season,” said Sean Lyons. “I will never forget this team.”

Poisson said, despite its disappointing conclusion, the season was positive overall. “I didn’t like to see these kids go. It was an easy season (for me as a coach), a good season,” said Poisson. “They’re all good kids.”
