Improved Bedford group has designs on powerful postseason

BY MATT SCHOOLEY

Last year, Bedford High School needed to purchase tickets for the Class I softball tournament.

With four games left in this regular season, the Bulldogs have put themselves in position to make sure that’s not necessary again.

Despite a 4-2 loss to Souhegan on Monday, May 18, Bedford boasts a 7-5 record and is currently one game behind a host of teams tied for seventh in the standings.

The Bulldogs used two powerful swings to come back against Souhegan before allowing the deciding runs to score in the top of the seventh inning.

Trailing 1-0 in the home half of the fourth, Carly Rosenfeld blasted a pitch over the fence in left-center field to knot the score at one.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs were down a run when Heather Fyfe dug in and hammered a home run out of the park in the same direction, tying the score at 2-2.

Bedford’s defense suffered a shaky final inning, and despite bringing the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, the Bulldogs couldn’t score against the Sabers, who improved to 6-6 on the year.

Souhegan and Bedford played two close contests in 2009; he Bulldogs earned a 4-3 victory on April 29 in Amherst.

“We know we’ll get a good game against them, and the level of play we’ll get is good to prepare us for the playoffs,” said head coach Derek Geddes. “We know we have to rebound. It’s OK to be annoyed and angry, but we have to be able to harness that.”

Of the final four games for the Bulldogs, three are against teams below them in the standings, including a Monday, May 26, date with winless Oyster River.

Rachel Morgan pitched well against the Sabers, allowing one earned run in a complete- game effort.

Geddes said Rosenfeld’s home run was an example of what his team needs to create tournament success.

“Early in the year she had been getting under the ball a bit,” said Geddes. “In her first at-bat she popped out, so we talked about level swings, and she put it to use. Those are the kind of in-game adjustments that we’ll need to make in the playoffs.”
