Blue Knights have trouble scoring

BY MATT SCHOOLEY

The West softball team may need to stop for directions. Lately, the Blue Knights have gotten lost trying to find home.

In the last seven games, West has scored once, including a 6-0 setback to Trinity on Friday, May 8.

With the loss, the Blue Knights fell to 2-8 on the year, and have scored runs in three games, crossing home 13 times all season.

Trinity pitcher Ellen Connell fired a one-hit shutout to further West’s slump, handing the Blue Knights a seventh consecutive loss.

“It’s been frustrating how much trouble we’ve been having hitting the ball,” said West head coach Dan Drewniak.

“We’re putting the bat on the ball, but we aren’t finding the holes. The ball just doesn’t have eyes for us right now.”

West right fielder Tricia Tardif of Bedford delivered the lone hit for her team, looping in a single from the second spot in the batting order.

The game remained close thanks to a solid pitching performance from Samantha Ayotte, but a three-run fifth inning put the game out of reach.

“We’ve concentrated on hitting during practice, and we’ve done just about every hitting drill there is,” said Drewniak. “It’s a funk, it’s a slump, but it’s hard when it’s happening to everyone at once.”

After losing its first contest of the season to Salem, 32-0, West bounced back to grab wins against Keene and Bishop Guertin.

Alie Thomas, a Bedford resident, led off and played center field for the Pioneers.

Tardif and first baseman Sarah Lacallaide are the final two Bedford players to hit the diamond for West.

Drewniak said Tardif and Lacallaide’s strength has been leadership during their time with the Blue Knights.

The mentor doesn’t expect a dropoff in talent after Bedford residents are officially gone from West, but he does expect to see an impact.

“The biggest difference will be in the depth,” said Drewniak. “We can get very skilled players from Manchester, but it’s about how many we can get to come out. It’s a numbers game.”
