Bedford High School, in its first varsity year, well on the road to success

BY MATT SCHOOLEY

For a team without any varsity experience, the Bedford High School boys lacrosse team is quite experienced.

The Bulldogs, entering the school’s first season of varsity play, are led by a group of players combining fresh talent and previous game experience.

Trevor Morrissette helped lead the team to a 1-1 start, scoring 10 goals in contests with Keene and Dover.

While it’s Morrissette’s first year of varsity play in Bedford, he took the field for West last season, as did Sam Grande, whom head coach Matt Guerard called the team’s best all-around midfielder.

Nate Larrivee may be the most gifted player on the Bulldogs; the 6-foot-5 freshman has open-field speed that makes him difficult to catch and stick skills Guerard said are far ahead of the curve.

“He is going to be a guy that teams aren’t going to just have to scheme against, they’re going to be scared of him,” said Guerard. During the winter Mike Marinelli was on the court for the BHS basketball team, and that’s already paying dividends on the lacrosse field.

Guerard said Marinelli is the best defensive midfielder he has. “Not many guys can get past him,” the coach said.

Last season the team played junior varsity to prepare for varsity- level competition, and many on the squad played in elite programs during the summer.

“We’re in a unique situation where we are experienced and have higher expectations than most first-year programs,” said Guerard. “One of the expectations is with all the talent we have, we want to make the playoffs.”

Guerard coached ice hockey last winter, where he said he learned the importance of encouraging athletes to believe in the system.

“We want to build a good, solid foundation to build off for the future,” he said. “It’ll set the tone for the state and the community to show what Bedford High School lacrosse is all about, and that we won’t be a pushover.”
